thanks for the tip HME

does anyone know if a school not classified as a university would have a place for foreign students? I was told it might actually be much more affordable.
thanks

Not sure what you mean by this. If it's not classified as a university but offering degrees, they're not likely to be very highly rated.

I agree with expat- if it's not a university, it's very unlikely it will be FAFSA approved...hence no federal student loans will be available.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

Leicester College, for instance...which has a program for international students...

it looks like for the moment this idea (becoming a student) will have to stay on the back burner until I can sort thru and find someone to help me with financial planning

thanks for helping me out

Hi. I'm a 38 year old History student at StAndrews University.

Where were you thinking about applying? What are you interested in studying? (I'm a history post-grad so don't worry about frightening me with specifics  :) )

David not sure if you are still checking this thread but what program are you in?  What degree are you looking to get?  I am interested in potential PhD programs and thought as you are a post-grad you might also be in the same track....

That's an FE (Further Education) college. You could take A-levels or GNVQ's there (post school but not degree level qualifications) there and probably vocational courses.

oh? they have degree courses listed, but most of them are in technical or business related fields...not really my area of interest

if anyone has suggestions for humanities (British history, language, social sciences) programs which don't cost a fortune and offer degrees, let me know...
otherwise I'll just do my studying on my own and hopefully be allowed back repeatedly as a visitor to continue visiting sites and getting first hand knowledge

Have you thought about the Open University: http://www.open.ac.uk/? You could just take one module a year (if it looks expensive) and come over for the summer schoo.

Sorry, its been a BUSY week of school for me.

I'm currently doing a Masters (M. Litt) in History. My plan is to get a PhD but the school wanted me to do the Masters first because I lack certain background bits (my Bachelor's is not in History.)From talking to the graduate director my grades so far have been good enough that there will be no problem going on into the PhD program, which is what they and I have expected all along.

It seems fairly normal, at least in my subject, to do a masters program first before the PhD. There are some students who are only getting the masters, and a few who plan on staying for the PhD.

I'm at StAndrews, btw, if I haven't said that before.

I'm new to the schools over here, but I'm an old hand at graduate school (I'm one of those students who never finishes). I'll try to answer any questions I can. But you might have to wait a few days for a reply - graduate school keep me pretty busy.
