Here's a question (education related)
« on: February 23, 2006, 12:38:41 PM »
I graduated with a BA in English from an American university and would like to go into teaching in the UK.  What is the equivalent of my BA in the UK, as I understand the system of degrees is ever-so-slightly different there.

Unless it is an associate degree, it is the same.

The real question is going to be when you are looking to teach. If you are looking to step in immediately then you will have to show that you have suitable teaching qualifications and levels of education. To figure this out you should contact the UKNARIC. They will look at your degree and teaching certification to see if you pass muster for a temporary teaching qualification which will then give you a set amount of time to work towards the english qualifications. Alternatively, you could start looking into some of the teaching agencies (Capita, Beacon, Recruit, etc.) over there to see what they think you will need, they may also be an easier in-route to your first few jobs.

I will be looking into the Graduate Teacher Training Programme and have already begun the process with NARIC to have my degree evaluated.

If you aren't already credentialed to teach in the US, look into doing a PGCE programme at a uni in the UK.  It'll be more in line with what you need than a GTT programme.

The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

I had looked into that as an option however I'm not necessarily sure my degree will transfer over with the required honors (2.2) for that programme.

I don't know how strict a 2.2 will be for PGCE.  It depends on the uni and since you'll be paying international student fees, they might have different policies.  It's worth checking out as another option as a GTT will be a lot more work.

The international student fees were what stopped me from going this course!

What if you are licensed to teach in the US (State of VA)? Then do you still need to go to NARIC to get your degrees evaluated?  I have a B.A. in Art and a Masters in Elementary Education.
