What is my degree worth?
« on: February 23, 2006, 12:58:20 PM »
Okay, I've searched all over the internet and can't seem to find a good clear answer to this one...

I have a BA in English.  As I understand it, the degrees awarded in the UK are graded as "firsts" "two-one" et al.  So how does one figure out what one's degree is equivalent to in the UK?

I'm also trying to do the same.  My degree is summa cum laude with honors from my particular college within my university.  I've found this website to be a bit helpful.  Hopefully, it'll help you as well:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_undergraduate_degree_classification

The university where I work looks for a GPA of around 3.5 as equivalent to a 2.1,

from what I've heard from different people who've gotten their credentials translated- it depends.  If it's a university doing the translation, different universities say different things.  There's no set GPA that is equal to a 2.1/first/whatever- at least not one that's standard among everyone. It's very confusing...but HME's post probably gives a good place to start.
