Anyone into running?
« on: February 23, 2006, 10:31:48 PM »
I been a long distance runner since I was 16, and would love to know if anyone here are into marathons, half marathons, cross country, etc..? I like to normally do like 16-17miles daily, but somedays I also like just to take it easy and do like 7 ,8 miles, just thought some folks might be also interested in runner´s world.
 :) :) :)

I took up running about a year and a half ago, and right when I really started getting into it, I got shin spints. I would really love to run more, but if I do it too much, I get shin splints again....ouch!

Hmm, I'm starting to run in April. I've got a training rotation for beginning runners to train for an 8K fun run type thing. I will be running twice a week and doing yoga, weight training and cardio the rest of the week.

IMissEngland, do you have any idea why you got shin splints, and any tips for me on how to avoid doing what you did?!

reason she got them is for not training right..or sometimes exceeding..usually happens..8k? hmm first of all some hints.. if you are going to really get into running make sure those weights you are going to lift are very very light, the lightest! and do many many of them.. I´ve always thought that weight and running don´t and will never go together..but..your choice..but if you are thinking to get addicted to running and trust me you will eventually do, once you see the atmosphere of the 8k and runners worl.. please avoid lifting weights.. and 2 days running?
I always gave my friends who started a 5 days plan that goes from 1 day yes 1 day no.. in progression.. if you don´t smoke that´s a mayor win..
I remember my first 10k it was fun and my time was 45 minutes!! hilarious! I was so ashamed on myself! now today my last 10k was scored in 30minutes 17 seconds ;D

oH! and one more suggestion! if you see that the day is muddy, rainy, cold.whatever..and you are like.uhh I don´t feel like getting out there today and rather stay at home cozy and warmn! ABSOLUTELY NO!!! get out there and get that job done! afterall..someone´s got to do it, so JUST DO IT!! ;) ;) TRUST ME; once you have finished and taking that warm shower you will be like.Oh mY god this feels so good. swb300zx was right!
good luck.
anyone interested in getting started in running or simple any runners questions I´m here, as for her problem she also needs to put ice and warm.

Yep been waiting to see if anyone would post about this.  I'm in training for a marathon right now.  It's in June (Edinburgh) and I am just at the beginning of the training plan.  It's not my first marathon but I haven't done one in a few years so I'm out of shape.  But how would you find the time to do 16-17 miles daily?  Even if you are running at a fast pace, that would still take like at least 3 hours?  I could never find the time to do that daily...

I'm into running but sadly, can rarely find the time with looking after 2 kids on my own. I can rarely get above a 7 mile run.... I try to run 3 times a week for 5 miles (usually at night which I hate - when my kids father is visiting them!)

I have done half marathons and have somewhat fancied a full one but just don't have the time to devote to training. Hopefully when the sprogs are older and more self-sufficient it might be a goal..

I work from 7:30am - 16:30 sometimes 5, come home, drop my bags, and first thing I do is get out there, yes takes me about a good 2 hours and half, including stretching after, wich is so important, so yes, takes about 3 hours, it´s all about arranging a schedule for yourself and stick to it, that is of course if nothing serious or emergency comes up; you have ran marathons already so you are on the experience side on how hard and cruel is training for a marathon, that is of course if you are thinking to do a good time; what is your best time in marathon? my last London marathon was 2hrs" 49min 44 seconds, eventhough I struggled to make it to finish line..had a down collapsed in km39 :-\\\\ but made it finally.

There is always time for running trust me; morning..afternoon day has 24 hours remenber? of course it´s sometimes sacrifised, had a friend in the Navy he always had night shift so I remenber he ran at 4 in the morning..now I think that is tooooo much,lol... ;D ;D
some people run before they go to work early in the morning , like around 5, then shower then off 2 work.. I prefer mornings also..
Let me know if u need any advice on your training. :)

swb.300zx, I am not planning to get into running as I am already a devotee of combined aerobics and weight training and functional training. I intend to add running twice a week for two months as something different to do for the cardio portions of my carefully planned training rotations. Hoping running, as something new, will shake my body and metabolism up a bit. If I like it I may continue after May, if not then I won't.

I have no intention of being in a an 8k run, but I am using The Firm's 8k run training rotation.

Thanks for tips, but I really like my biceps and upper body, so I do intend to continue with weight training.

Oh dear. Once again I've managed to write a terse-sounding reply when I didn't mean to. I'm sorry! I was just telling you what my plan was, that I'm not intending to become a runner and I have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to do. Just wondering about the shin splint issue.

Sorry!  :-[

Really? Then do let me know how that is possible as a single mother on my own???  Leave the children to their own devices as I nip out for a quick 45?  I don't have a lot of friends who I can rely on to come cover for me so I can sneak out.

Sorry but I find your comments a bit patronising.  I used to get up at 5:00 am 5 x a week to go running before my 6 month old got up for his morning feed so yes, I have made the sacrifices needed to run!  And I find it maddening now to be in a position where I literally CANT despite being desperate to every day.

As I stated in my previous post, I sneak out at night when the children's father comes to tuck them in and on every other weekend when I don't have them on the weekends.  Other than that, I am stuffed and find it very frustrating so your comments have really raised a red flag to this particular bull.

I am into running, especially now that the weather is warmer.  Not sure about doing 16-17 per day but 8-10 perhaps?  My goal is to make it into the London Marathon for next year.  I was thinking of joining the Serpentine Running Club but a running partner would be nice.
