Any place to find Polish foods?
« on: February 25, 2006, 02:53:07 PM »
I just realized today that Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday!   :o  I need to purchase some paczkis for Fat Tuesday...and I'm not sure where to get them.  Seeing as they're usually a Polish thing, I thought someone out there might know where to find a Polish store/deli?  I've got to make some pierogis as well so will get some fillings there I'd guess, if I can find a store!

Although I've never been there, I understand Lidl has a lot of brands of various foods from Poland. It's where my friend picks up pickles for me.

Have you got a local market you could try?

Not sure where you are located, but there is a market in Salisbury on Tuesday and Saturday-recently I have noticed a booth selling Polish items.

My Grandmother used to bring us them(she was 1st generation Polish) the day before lent. Fat tuesday was called Punzcki day. The spelling is probably wrong but there was a N in the name. There is a Polish deli on the Old Kent Road not far from you. Your post made me think of her when I was little. Thankyou! Goodluck on your search.

Are you close to Reading, geetak? We've got a fantastic Polish deli/bakery etc. We had kielbasa for dinner not too long ago - yummy!! Friendly people as well. One of the women was telling us  there isn't a "th" sound in Polish so she has difficulty saying words like "teeth" and then made a joke about Brits not pronouncing "r" so it was ok. Heehee. Very nice shop, I'd highly recommend it! :D

Wow thanks a lot!  I know exactly where Old Kent Road is and will check it out before Tuesday.  Yep my mom is second generation Polish so she has instilled in us the importance of the paczki (I don't know how the official spelling is, I think I got that off a website somewhere - but we pronounce it more like poonch-key).  I have been thinking of my mom lots too around this time - she emailed me her pierogi recipe and I got the special cheese filling today so I'll be trying to make them for the first time by myself on Tuesday!  Wish me luck....

No problem!  After I read your post (before I saw the edit) I thought, hmm where is Reading?  Actually we are going out there next weekend - DH is rowing in a regatta there!

Let us know how you get on making your pierogi!!  My grandparents are from Slovakia, my grandma and Great Aunt Helen taugh me one year how to make them.  It was a fantastic experience and one that will stay with me forever!!   :)  DH is hooked on 'em so I make them at least 3 times a year now and always remember that afternoon with my gran.   :)

I'm making them tonight!  I was going to do it for Fat Tuesday but then ran out of time...we ended up going to the theatre instead.  So tonight will be the trial run - I will report back on my progress!

ooooh, this has made me want pierogi now...My BIL is Polish (his dad was born after his parents met in a concentration camp, actually...then they fled to the US) Anyways, he makes fantastic pierogi! YUM!! I love them, and the plainer, the better..just the potato and cheese type fillings, or the ones he makes with some sauerkraut...or just served up with the kraut and keilbalsa on the side...yum....oooh, so hungry now!!
