They have a finite lifespan (the batteries, that is), and mine was so far gone that it wouldn't hold a charge for even a few seconds.  Nothing more fun than an iPod that is always plugged into the wall.

I've heard that's a problem with iPods - batteries don't have very long lives. Wasn't there some sort of mass refund or something at one point?

There was, but that came several years before I bought mine.  However, my iPod is about four years old (maybe five) so I can't really complain.

Wow; I'd no idea (about the iPod battery).  I know it doesn't last long while watching a video, but fortunately end up somewhere I can recharge it before it fails.
