Wedding Dress - Bring or not?
« on: March 02, 2006, 07:03:23 PM »
I love my wedding dress - it was so beautiful when I got married.  But it has been sitting in a closet since.  I didn't get it cleaned or preserved.

Is it really worth hanging on to?  I'd need to have it cleaned and preserved before I shipped it over - and I hear that isn't really cheap.  I don't plan on wearing it again.  And the chances of my daughter (if I even have one) actually wanting to wear it are slim.

Did you hang onto your dress?  Why or why not?

I have my dress lying on my bed in my parents house.  I don't know what to do with it.  I loved mine too, but I'm thinking of maybe donating it somewhere to someone who can also enjoy it.

I know my mom preserved hers and has no idea where it could be.  But if you do feel so strongly about your dress you should do something with it.  I know some people cut it shorter and dye it.

have it cleaned and sell it on ebay..you may make some young lady very happy to have a lovely wedding gown that couldn't afford to pay full price for a dress but still wants to feel like a princess!

Plus you get a bit of money back and you get a good feeling for helping someone out!

Mine is still hanging in a closet in my grandmother's house.  I don't have any real sentimental attachment to it because it's far too big now (thank god!), so I don't really want to hang onto it (and lord help me if I ever have a daughter big enough to fit in it  ::)).

I think I'll have it cleaned next time we're in the US and throw that baby up on eBay!   ;)

Just remember that space is an issue here.  If you're gonna be living in a flat, you probably won't have access to a loft/attic, so you'll need to find somewhere to store that big ol' box.

I probably should just get rid of it.  I'm off to check out prices on ebay.

I know some people also have their dresses made into quilts. A quilt will come in handy over here and you get to keep the sentiment of your dress.

I actually got my wedding dress from an event called Brides Against Breast Cancer that travels around the US. Women donate their dresses and 100% of the proceeds go towards the  breast cancer foundation and cancer research. plus it is tax deductible! Breast cancer runs in my family and I didn't want to spend a fortune on a dress. I found the most gorgeous dress!!  Not all the dresses have been worn before, some are donated from designers as well.  :)

Mine is in the closet in my parents house, but I was thinking of donating it back to the organization.

I think this is the web address:  http://www.makingmemories.org/howtodonate.html

I love this idea! Instead of wedding favors at our wedding we donated $1 for each of our guests to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Thank you so much for that site.  It's perfect!  I'm going to send it to my mom and have her do this for me.

No problem! I try to share it with everyone I can because I think it is such a wonderful cause! :D

This is another page from that link that explains it a bit more as well...

Wow yeah - thanks a lot for sharing this!  It looks like a wonderful program and I will definitely do it!  I have my wedding gown from my first marriage lovingly preserved in a BIG STUPID BOX IN THE CLOSET - and I definitely do not want it!  So this is a great idea.  AND DH is from Portland as well!  So we could probably drop it off in person sometime when we get over that way.
