woo hoo!  atlcollie wins!!  but how come neither you nor yibis have been to India?  :\\\'(

My grandfather spent some time in India with his regiment way back in colonial days -- Around 1920-ish.

Belize

I'm curious -- How did you find Belize?   I did some reading up on the place a couple of years ago, and seemed to get a very mixed report on the country.

Very humid, be sure and take bug spray as there are mosquitos. We went with a couple who were looking to buy a 2nd home. They ended up buying in St Kitts. Snorkeling is good. I probably would go other places before I'd go there again.

Thanks.  I was just wondering how anyone who had been there had found the place.   I've seen some reports from people who are very enthusiastic about the country for the cheap real estate, less government red-tape, warm climate etc., but then a lot of others who warn about the difficultiy of getting things done, a high rate of petty crime, bad roads and infrastructure, high prices on many goods due to import duties and so on.

I LOVED Belize. I had been there when I was in the Army and our unit was involved in a bunch of humanitarian work after Hurricane MItch.  I also went for the diving. If you're a SCUBA diver, it's probably the second best diving spot in the world after Australia. Dirt cheap.  But yes, lots of mosquitos.

India: Awesome experience you have to do once in your life! We went to Agra (Taj Mahal), New Dehli and Madras (now Chennai).  DIRT cheap. You can stay in a 5 star hotel for about $100 a night (my favorite is the Imperial Hotel); the same room would probaly cost $1,000 in London!

Yep agree although now it is more like $200 a night, but still that's an amazing deal!  You can feel like a king/queen....

That was just last February when we were in India, for a friend's wedding. I think we paid $120 a night at the Imperial. In Madras we only paid $99 a night for a 5* room that was about 10 times the size of our London flat!

P.S. I'm so jealous of AtlCollie. My live ambition is to visit all 230 countries on Earth.  The Washington Post had an article a few months ago about an exclusive group of Americans who had actually accomplished that goal.  The hardest country to visit was North Korea. They had to go as part of a cultural exchange group and were forced to bow before a statue of Kim Jong II.

Honestly, I did have basically a head start as I said, my dad was career USAF, I started flying out of uni and my DH used to own part of Travelbag. I HAD to travel  ;)

US
Canada
Mexico
UK
France
Belgium (woohoo!  ::))
Holland

The end.   Think I need to get out more . . .
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

I liked Belgium:  fries with mayo, waffles, chocolate, good beer (for DH), diamonds (Antwerp), Rubens...what's not to like? ;D

Belgium is great for all of the reasons shown above... plus they have this yoghurt which is a mixture of yoghurt and fromage frais, with real vanilla (including the little brown seeds) in it ... GORGEOUS!

Also... Jacques Brel was Belgian!  :)
