When/How to sell car?
« on: March 08, 2006, 08:08:08 PM »
I tried searching this topic and, while it must have been covered already, I couldn't find the info I was looking for.

We are selling my husband's car now (he's leaving in 5 weeks).  I'll still be around, so we'll still have my car for transport.  And if his car doesn't sell before he leaves it's not a problem.

But when I leave in September I need to get rid of my car.  I will need it for transportation right up until the flight.  How have people dealt with this?  Did you/is it possible to list the car for sale with a particular "delivery date"?  Did anyone just transfer ownership to a family member and have them sell it for you and put the money in your account?  Or maybe sell it to a family member for a slightly low price and let them pocket any profit?

Any thoughts or experiences would be helpful.

Thanks.

I sold my car a week before leaving the country... I traveled during that week so it wasn't an issue. I owned it in full so it was just a matter of finding a buyer. I used Craigslist and sold it quicker that I expected. Had it not sold, I would have had my sis sell it for me and just deposit the money into my account.

how about renting a car if you still need a vehicle after selling? my friend told me about a place called "rent a wreck" to save money. It is all on the up and up just not a nice car likek rentals... depends where you are located of course.

I sold mine about 10 days before leaving, and some multiple-auto friends loaned me a lovely red BMW convertible! If you don't know anyone with spare wheels to lend you, I second the rent-a-wreck option.

I sold mine privately and was able to negotiate giving them a better price if they were willing to wait until the specific date I was able to give it up.

I had the same worry too...didn't want to be without transportation for too long.

I put a sign in my car in the parking garage near my office one evening and a parking attendant saw it and we made the deal. Just a few days before I left, I picked him up in the morning and drove him to the DMV to do the paperwork and he drove me back to my office. It worked out well.

Best of luck!

Thanks everyone - we'll see how long it takes to sell his car and go from there.  It's nice to know that others have sold their cars with the agreement that the other party won't take ownership until a certain date.

Yes, we ended up taking both of ours to Carmax and sold them on the same day.  While they were appraising one we drove the other to pick up a rental car.
We received a very good price on our mini van (2003 Mazda MPV) and an alright price on our 95 corolla.
We were impressed with how smoothly things went.
Must admit that I cried when I gave them the keys to the corolla-I drove that car off the lot all those years before and we have been through a lot together!
On the day we flew out (5 days later) we just dropped off the rental car and had the courtesy bus take us to the terminal.

We sold ours to Carmax also. Only snag we hit was the title was joint, and although I had a Power of Attorney from DH to sign on his behalf, they wouldn't accept it because apparently a general power of attorney is not acceptable in the State of Texas to transfer property (WTH is it for then I ask  ???). As I found this out the day before DD and I were to fly out, it was a bit of a logisitical nightmare (lots of fedexes and we had to both give the special power of attorney to transfer a car title to our neighbour, who then "sold" it to them for us). So if your title is joint and you wont both be there, get your partner to complete Carmax's form (if the same applies in your state). Also, if there is a lien on the car,  go to sell it during business hours when your financial institution is available to verify the payoff info. Otherwise you might have to wait until the next day.

HTH
Stop waiting. Start doing.

It's so funny how everyone has the same sort of situations. I put my car for sale on Cars.com and I sold it in 4 days! I was shocked. I thought it would take a lot longer. I still have 2 weeks left so I rented a car- got a great deal on Orbitz for only $120 a week for a mid-size. I owed a lot of money still on my car but I ended up walking away with a small profit which is paying for my rental so it all worked out in the end.

I was so stressed about selling my car...I lost a LOT of sleep over it!  I ended up placing an ad in the Washington Post over the weekend and it was sold by Monday.  I had a wonderful friend who let me borrow her car for the remaining week I was in the states...she let me drive it 1000 miles to and from my parent's house!  Good luck, you'll probably find it's easier then you expect.  Oh, one tip, ask for more then you expect to get because everyone tries to talk the price down!

How do you handle selling your car if you are still making payments on it?  I'm unsure of how to go about selling it!  I'll probably take it to CarMax as well, as there is one really close by.  :)

Hey niku2
I was thinking of carmax (I bought my car at the lovely Tinley location) but they didn't really give me a quote nearly close to what it was worth (well not what I thought it was worth).  I used craigslist and got a price I was happy with and it was very simple as well.  Just take a few pictures, write something for the ad, and you're done.  Then wait for the emails...

I would say let them appraise it and see if the price is close to the KBB or Autotrader price.

We owed a little bit on our mini van but carmax gave us a good price on it.  Actually made a nice profit on it.  Prior to going in we obtained the pay off amount and determined what the KBB value was.  So we had an idea of what to expect.  Once at Carmax we gave them the loan information, and they called to verify the payoff amount.
Now, I suspect we could have made more on the corolla if we had sold it privately.  But this process was much simpler for us.  I think it all depends on if the vehicle you have is in demand or not as to the final price.
