I want to go to Paris.
« on: March 14, 2006, 10:27:16 PM »
...or Venice, or somewhere on the Continent during my 4 week Easter break. What is the cheapest way for an under 25 student? Any recommendations for things to do other than the Eiffel tower in Paris?

I have to see the Louvre and Versailles; is there any costume-y type things?

Eurostar seems cheapest from London, and I would *love* to go on it (25.00 each way). How long is it underwater (I think that would freak me a bit)

Thanks.

(BTW, this is my first time traveling out to the Continent, and I barely speak French. I will be alone most likely.)

Thanks so much. :)

have you tried STA travel??

Middlesex university offers trips for their students ...cheapie ski trip and so on  so they don't go alone

http://www.mdx.ac.uk/24-7/news/events.htm#apr

..do they offer that at your uni?? check their student union!
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

Look here too:
www.contiki.com

They might have some good last minute deals.  I did a tour first time I went to Europe in my 20's.  Best thing I ever did and I am still friends with a lot of the people from the tour.

I've been solo in Paris several times. No problems at all. I did the hostel thing and met people/"friends for a day" there to do stuff. There are plenty of museums... Rodin and Picasso were my favs. You can get a museum pass and that is a good deal and can help you skip the queue too. You can do a bike tour or a seine cruise or both!

I'd suggest hooking up with day tours rather than stuck with a group for a week or so... group dynamics are a funny thing, good or bad potential.

Something I started doing in my travels is take a mellow day and see life as a local... take a picnic to the park and watch life go by, get lost, poke your head in local shops, attend a mass or church service. It really gives a different view on life when you stop to smell the roses.

Good luck. Paris is lovely even for those who only know a few phrases  ;)

Mellow Day. That's what you call it. Very good suggestion to pass on. And Paris is one such place to have a mellow day or 2 or 3...

I don't speak French but it was easy to get by (German helps a bit, at least it shows them you are making an effort). I did find that I had to ask if they spoke English. One of my French friends says they just want to hear you ask for help.

Paris in the springtime...

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

We're heading to Paris at the end of may.  Can't wait.  Other than musee picasso, and looking for impressionist exhibits, watching the world go by sounds like the best thing.  and eating and drinking.  Any other ideas?

Also, I went to Paris on my own when I was 18.  I had no problems.  Just know your please and thank you, your numbers and "ou sont les toilettes" and you will do fine!

The have user reviews, etc.

Update on me: I got Eurostar tickets for 49 GBP roundtrip, and my relative's best friend's granddaughter has offered me a room, and company  :) Also, she is a student at the school of couture  :o

Thank you everyone for your help! I am planning on eating cereal for a cheap breakkie execpt 1 crossiant day, and use the NYtimes/Markets, etc for the rest.

there is so much to do there...it really is my favorite city!!!!!

There is the amazing bar that does the best salads i have ever had. ever.  near montmarte (where the sacre cour is).

There is the amazing place that does the moulton hot chocolate that you eat with a spoon

there is the musee de bacarrat....funky and full of bacarrat glass.  a phenominal building

There is the Gardens de luxembourg.  Nice to stroll around

going underwater is only 20 min from entry.  i'm not a big fan of being underground, but i get through it! (i do it once a month usually)

good luck.  it is a spectacular place!!!!!!!
