Salad Dressing Nightmare
« on: March 15, 2006, 01:53:01 PM »
I'm a vegetarian, so as you can imagine, salads are a big part of my diet.  Trouble is, I'm very picky about my dressings.   I only like Italian dressing and Kraft fat free Catalina.

I have not found either one of these here.  All I keep seeing is Thousand Island and Salad Cream (which I can only guess tastes like Miracle Whip).

Does anyone know of a good place to get American salad dressings either online or in south east England?

I have not seen the  American dressings that you mentioned here.  There are plenty of Italian blends in UK supermarkets though.

Do you have someone that could possibly ship your favorite brands?  Another trick for Italian is just to whip it up yourself.  Either using those packets shipped from the USA or using nice oils and vinegars available here.

I usually just make my own.  That way you know what you are getting.

Not sure if this helps.

I've tried making my own, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm horrible... but I'll see if I can give that shipping thing a try.

Aw.. I am sure you just need to try some different ones...

Have you tried any of the UK brands of Italian?

Have you been to Sainsbury's?  That's where I get my salad dressing.  I like Newman's Own Italian.  They carry it there.  They also have quite a selection of Kraft dressings, as well.

Tesco's does a really nice organic Italian dressing. They call it French, but it's basically oil & vinegar with spices, herbs, etc. in it. I buy that when I'm feeling lazy as I generally like to whip up my own dressings as well.

We also get Brianna's dressings here which are lovely.

Hellman's does some nice dressings, there's a nice Italian vinegrette (sp?) one and a garlic one that's really tasty. I also recently got a nice avocado and lime dressing from M&S.

I'll have to go there and see.  I ususally just shop at Asda since it's so close, but I'll give Sainsbury's a try.

There's plenty of Newman's Own brand ones here that are vegetarian or vegan.

Morrison's has a good selection and have started selling Kraft dressings.

I get the Newman's Own as well.  My mother-in-law also mails me little packets of Zesty Italian dressing mix and Hidden Valley Ranch.  I also haven't had much luck making my own Italian dressing, but have a great recipe for an easy Greek dressing.

That avocado and lime dressing sounds good, Britwife!  I don't think I explore M&S nearly enough.

Salad Cream (which I can only guess tastes like Miracle Whip).

Salad Cream and Miracle Whip are in the same family of faux mayos but don't taste similar  :P

There are some lovely oils and vinegars here to try as vnice suggested. I heard a travel tip once that suggested buying the local oils or vinegars and bringing that back as a trip memento. I did that in CA just before I left... a lovely merlot vinegar and herby olive oil.

I have this same problem - vegetarian and I don't like most of the salad dressings here.  I really dislike most Italian/vinegar based dressings so that doesn't leave much over here.  I am thinking of bringing some of my own next time (lame, I know, but it will help me enjoy salads more at home).  I especially miss RANCH...yum.

If you bring the packets of Hidden Valley Ranch mix, it takes up a lot less room in your suitcase!   ;D
