Do you think this meat is still ok?
« on: March 16, 2006, 12:59:42 AM »
I bought some beef stew meat (cubed already) and when I went to get it out of the fridge, it had started to turn brown and when I opened it, it had kind of a mild "off" smell to it, but it wasn't really bad. Should I just throw it out or might it be salvageable? I'm not a big red meat eater so I'm not sure what the point of no return is for beef.

I bought it on Monday, so today would be two days I have had.

I think it should be okay then, since you just bought it Monday.  I know what you mean by it having a mild "off" smell, I've cooked meat like that before and it was fine.  Especially if you're going to be cooking it for a while.

I'd sear it really hot, though. Have you got an iron skillet or something else you can heat high?

I do, but I have already mixed in with the vegetables and stew mix in the ceramic part of my crock pot. I put that in the fridge and was going to cook while at work tomorrow, at least 8 hours on low. But my mom and the MIL both said should be fine. I guess I'll risk it, just get antsy about meat.

Oh, that's okay. I'd trust roadkill in a crockpot  ;)

Yep, was looking forward to coming home to dinner all ready, kind of got pissed off if my plans were shot for that. Love my crockpot! ;D
