Do you refrigerate peanut butter?
« on: March 17, 2006, 12:01:19 PM »
I recently bought some Skippy here in the UK and noticed the label said to refrigerate it after opening. I don't ever remember peanut butter in the US saying this on the labels (but I can't remember actually ever reading them). Do they say it too? Is it supposed to be refrigerated? I've never kept mine in the fridge.

Me either!  Does it also say 'Use within 3 days of opening'?  (so many jars of things here say that) ::)

[You'd really have to like peanut butter to eat the whole jar within 3 days!  lol]

I always refridgerate my peanut butter.   Not sure if you are suppose to, but I do.

I never used to refrigerate my skippy, but my housemate used to buy the all natural stuff, and he always put it in the fridge.
Its not soft and spreadable when its cold!! :P

I think the natural stuff you're supposed to refridgerate because the oil can go rancid when it separates. But I never refridgerate the normal stuff. I agree with Jenn - it wouldn't spread right!

I buy the all-natural stuff, too, but I've never refrigerated it. And I'm not big on peanut butter (just eat it when the rare urge comes over me) so it lasts a looooong time. Am I doing something horribly wrong??

Now that I think of it, I may have refrigerated the all-natural Smuckers peanut butter that I used in the States, but only because it doesn't have all the added preservatives.  Never Skippy though.  It does get really hardened in the fridge though -- I would put in the microwave to soften it up.

That's exactly why I wouldn't want to do it! I figure with as much peanut butter as I've eaten over my life, if I was going to get sick from not refrigerating it, I would have by now!

Does anyone in the States have a jar in their cupboard? I'm curious to know if it says to refrigerate or if it's a UK thing.

I'm in the UK, but I brought reduced fat JIF with me from the US because I eat it everyday and I read that it was hard to find. I just looked at my jar and it says....

 No preservatives
 No refridgeration required

and there you have it.  ;) I have never heard of PB in the fridge either, but the natural thing makes sense.

I've never refrigerated mine, just the jelly. I want some GRAPE JELLY right now!!! I've been craving a proper pb&j for ages now! This reminds me, and sorry to hijack, but I was at tescos the other day, trying to buy granary bread, and the 12 or 15 loaves  they had all had their display by date, as THAT day, and all had the use by date as the NEXT day!! HUH?? I was so aggravated, and I wanted to ask them if they were going to discount it the next day, or remove it from the shelves.

I went to a healthy foods seminar a long time ago...

They said to refrigerate ALL oils and ALL oily stuff (like pb).  They said most food poisoning and many other illnesses came from bad oil.

I think they're nuts.   Even IF they have a point, cooling and re-warming stuff all the time has to be almost as bad as just keeping it in a usable state.

Skippy is immortal, though.

I don't.. And I don't eat it after 3 days and it's fine. I have never ever put Skippy in the fridge.

Let's see do you or should you refridgerate Skippy peanut butter?

Well let's see I think there are two separate issues here that need to be dealt with.

1)  Refridgeration would make for some seriously thick and unspreadable peanut butter.  So my vote is no.

2)  Skippy peanut butter????  Therein lies the first and biggest mistake here.   Come on the best peanut butter in the world is JIF!!!!!

 ;D
