How much do you spend on food a month?
« on: March 19, 2006, 06:16:58 PM »
My husband and I are trying to work on our budget and am wondering what people on this board spend on food a month.  We are a family of two and will be living outside of Glasgow.  So...how much do you spend on food a month and how big is your family and where do you live? (if you don't mind me asking that is!)

Thanks :)

i live in the southwest, and it's just DH and I.  i'm going to estimate that i spend about 150-200GBP a month on food.  but i would have to say about 20 of that is me buying new products that i haven't tried (which usually end up being crap anyway).

i would say the majority of what i spend per month is on meat.  and i don't buy juice usually...only the odd one here and there (buying juices can get expensive...especially in the US).  my estimate also doesn't include alcohol...just so you know.

it's quite easy to get by on very little (money) per month when it comes to food.  staple items are usually inexpensive (for the most part) and there is always a super cheap alternative to a product that you might really like (like the store brand of american sliced cheese, cans of veg, etc.)  and if you wanna go super cheap...ramen noodles are only .08p at tesco!!

We spend £200-250 per month (average of £50 per week).  That's for two of us and a dog and includes all cleaning supplies and toiletries (except my makeup).  We're in Newcastle upon Tyne.  We don't buy any alcohol and no prepared/convenience foods (except crisps for DH's lunchbox  ;)).

We spend 200-250 per month including household items but not personal hygeine stuff. I make 3 meals a day for 2 of us and then Peter snacks a lot. We buy a lot of fresh meat and fish and fruit and veg. I try to make enough for dinner to have leftovers to send with Peter for lunch. We live in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

well usually we spend about 60 pounds a week for most food (we out twice a week) but this week we spent 100!!!!  :o  I had run out of some staples but still!  yikes!

i'd say 250 a month is safe for me.  i budget 75 a week.

We spend between 50-60 a week I think, closer to 50 most weeks.  Don't buy alcohol/soda/ready meals/chips/candy/pastries etc.  Oh and no meat/fish so that makes the bill a lot lower.  I think we eat out 2x/week maximum.  We just went to Waitrose this evening and it was 35 pounds but we didn't get everything we needed.

Er, didn't think about eating out....figure another £20-40 per week for that.  We always go out once on the weekend and end up eating out during the week once or twice a month.

We spend about 250+ per month for our family of four.  I don't buy a lot of junk food (every couple of weeks or so) and it includes meat, toiletries, cleaning supplies.  We eat breakfast and supper at home every night and the kids pack lunch everyday.  DH and I pack a lunch 3 times a week and buy lunch twice a week.  We do buy beer and wine.

Maybe it is because of where we live and we have to have everything ferried over and they don't import beef or bread or milk....we have to buy Manx produce only!...but we spend about £100 to £150 a week for a family of 4

£60 per week, including cleaning stuff and bathroom stuff, but not including alcohol.
This is for 2 people, in the central belt of Scotland.

Mine has remained the same from the previous thread, still a lot of crap Rich adds ;).  This will be going up in the next few months when the baby comes. (OY)

About £40/week including stuff like kitchen roll and washing powder.  There are four of us, but one's only 3 months so still on a liquid diet.  We get all our veg and meat from the farmer's market once/fortnight, and nearly all our meals we make from scratch. I bake from scratch and also use an electric yoghurt maker and ice cream maker.  Oh, we also make our own bread in a bread machine.

OUr biggest expense is milk b/c Aillidh drinks about a pint a day and we give her organic for the extra Omega 3s in it.  And I use it to make her yoghurts.

We both love using kitchen gadgets and we also love to cook - AND eat.

For cleaning products I buy a gallon jug of Dr. Bronner's Peppermint soap for £30 that lasts an entire year.

What a good mom you are! You make me very envious...I wish I had the time or inclination to bake and make things like you.
