Foods you hated as a child, but now can't live without
« on: March 27, 2006, 07:30:57 PM »
I'm just curious what foods people hated as children but now love.

Mine:

Avocado and guacamole
Grapefruit
Lasagna

Brussels sprouts....especially yummy marinated!
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

Most vegetables...particularly marinated and grilled zuchini, squash, peppers.  Fruit too.  As a kid I would *only* eat apples and oranges.  I've now expanded my tastes to include grapes, berries of all descriptions, mangos, grapefruit.  Still don't like pineapple, though.   :-X

i can't really remember much of what i didn't like that i like now.  i still remember clear as day the foods that i hated as a child and still do (brussel sprouts, cooked oatmeal/porridge).

there were a lot of things that i didn't know i liked when i was younger.  my dad didn't like fish of any kind, so i never had my first bit of real seafood until i was about 15...but i've loved it since day one.

i'll keep thinking about this one tho and see if i can remember what i didn't like when i was little....

Hmmmm, I think I liked most everything I still do ;D  I was in no way a fussy eater at all.  Except for most fish except Salmon and seafood, love that.

Oh, I hated anything spicy, now, I can't get enough, the spicier the better.

Rice. I hated rice as a child. That's because school lunch rice was fat and shiny and served in a glistening sweet sugar sauce. They looked like larvae of some kind. Ulch. Making myself sick thinking of it. Didn't try rice again until I was in my twenties. Nice stuff, rice. Huh.

Most of the foods I disliked as a child I still dislike. The exception is spicy foods, as others have mentioned. I've heard it said you like spicy foods more as you get older because your sad old tastebuds can bear what your sensitive young tastebuds couldn't.

Strawberries.  My mom had a patch in the backyard and during the summer it was strawberries, strawberries, strawberries on everything.  I used to pick them and throw them over the fence so she couldn't make me eat them.  The neighbors must've loved me. :P

Wow, FunGirl! You just woke up a really, really old braincell.

When I was little, when the strawberries ripened, there was a tradition that you were fed one whole meal that consisted of nothing but strawberries...pie, shortcake, with cream, whatever. The thinking being, you'd get your fill and wouldn't pinch strawberries while you were picking them.

I hadn't thought of that in a thousand years. I don't remember ever actually picking strawberries, however.

I would never eat mustard as a child, and will eat it now in very small doses, but only English mustard.
The other thing is spinach... wouldnt touch it as a child, and now like it if it's in a curry.   :)
