I've never tried it....although the last Indian restaurant I went to offered 'salty lassi' in addition to 'mango lassi'.

That's my dad's favourite! He's always bummed when they only have mango ones, which is usually the case.

It's primarily used for making Manhattan-style clam chowder.  And really gross bloody marys.

this I had to respond to...  Clamato juice is a staple in Canada.  Any self respecting bride and groom has clamato juice along side the coca-cola at the bar.  Gross bloody marys are called Caesars.  Clamato juice, vodka, bit of lemon juice, splash of worcester sauce, few drops tabasco, in a celery salt rimmed glass with a celery stick (salt and celery stick are for the fancy weddings..)  Seriously, Clamato can be found in any grocery store, big or small and every bar.  I did also see adds for Clamato in LA and Mexico.  But they serve it with tequila.  Not bad that way either.  My favourite way is straight. I actually miss it!

I think jeera is cumin, and since cumin is my favourite spice... i think i might actually like that!

Yes jeera is cumin and it figures prominently in the drink.  Perhaps you would like it Quarter-Gill!  I can send you some of the powder and you can try it at home...unless that is against the law due to anthrax scares or something.  People might think I'm sending drugs....

This discussion about Clamato and V8 just confirms my theory that salty drinks are crimes against nature....

Didn't mean to insult - I just think it's nasty.  And, yeah, it's available pretty much everywhere in the States.

What is welfare cheese  ???

Geetak - The V8 juice here only has 0.3g of sodium per 100ml. Is that different to the US version?

Don't know but I'm guessing the V8 in the US is not much different from the one in the UK.

What is welfare cheeseĀ  ???

My mom used to get 'commodities' cheese from some kind of US govt surplus program (for low income people).  (In the Reagan/Bush Sr trickle down 'era of prosperity'...that was what trickled down to mom...lol)  I am not sure if that's the same that t&c is talking about.  But this cheese was basically a huge block of generic American cheese, as I recall.  She also got things like generic peanut butter, rice, flour etc.  Most of the stuff was ok but the peanut butter was positively nasty. :P  (We used it for making things like peanut butter cookies & that was alright.)

Yep, sounds like the same stuff, carolyn. "Reagan Rancid Cheese" as it was known affectionately.
