healthy snacks when traveling
« on: March 27, 2006, 11:23:22 PM »
I wasnt really sure where to put this but I decided it may be best here. Im flying out in 2 days!!

I need ideas for snacks I can pack that are light, healthy and not hard to prepare/eat...because I have to eat about every 2 hours or I get sick. I will also be traveling over 24 hours :( I have to try to keep it to whatever will fit in a backpack too. Id rather not buy anything from the airport unless I need to eat a meal while there, which I know I will, and those prices are bad enough but the snack type things are ridiculous.

Ok well I'm not pregnant and I don't eat meat!  But DH is constantly snacking on our trips because we usually get crap food on the flights (see condition 2).

-trail mix with nuts, raisins, etc.  Very healthy and easy to pack!
-assorted nuts/raisins/cranberries/dried fruit
-snack bars like Kellogg's, etc.
-small, easy to carry fruits like small apples, bananas, clementines
-small yogurts if you can eat them relatively quickly while they are still cool
-fig newtons! yum

Ive actually been craving fig newtons...;) I loved em as a kid, as well as dried apricots..but then when I was told by someone there were bugs in fig newtons..well...I couldnt eat them anymore ;) But pregnancy sorta makes you a LOT more willing to eat things you thought you never would...lemon ice cream with french fries is pretty good for example ;)

I usually bring dried fruits - easy to travel with, doesn't matter if it gets smooshed and don't have to prepare a thing!  I'll also carry breakfast bars.

ritz crackers.  small pot of peanut butter.  carrot sticks.  rice cakes (get a bit messy though).  LOTS of water.  small apples & bananas.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Up until recently, I would have suggested chocolate bars and diet coke....somehow I just don't think that is what you are looking for.

Grapes travel pretty well.  If you like cheese (or I should probably say, processed cheese),  the little Laughing Cow triangles of cheese do not need to be refridgerated and can be spread on crackers.  Almonds or cashews are very filling and don't take up too much space.

Good luck!

I always have almonds with me, and I think it's ensure, they have these new bars called healthy mom or something like that.
Try not to do peanuts, they say that is the one nut to stay away from during pregnancy.  Ohh craisons are always good with the trail mix as well.

I get nibbly on the long journey as well and I'm one for the nut thing, too- I tend to buy raw sunflower seeds and cashew nuts (because they are cheaper and unsalted!) and then roast some up to stick in a container. I very rarely am without sunflower seeds and raisins- as I'm trying to avoid peanuts, too.

Other things I've done for past flights:
Pop some popcorn and ziplock it.
fruit
granola bars
mints
bottles of water (so the dehydration doesn't set in)

Sometimes just the smell of the airplane cuisine cooking makes me nauseous so the mints are helpful hehe

Roasting them yourself!  That is genius!  I should do that. (If I knew how)

Water is a great suggestion, you need to drink even more then regular on planes.  Bring a big bottle and ask them to refill it for you often.  Ohh, I know most people hate ginger, but altoids do ginger mints, they saved me on the plane.

don't forget to keep in mind that you aren't allowed to bring dairy or meat products into this country from the US.  i was going to suggest beef jerky, but you aren't allowed to bring that either (even tho it's already cooked).  granted, they don't exactly search your bag upon arrival, but i would be careful with these things just incase they do decide to stop you...it would be something they could give you trouble about.

also be careful with fruits and some nuts (at least chestnuts).  you can find out more here:  http://importdetails.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Location=None&Module=IDDSearch .  pick the country your coming from in the list, click add, then click on the product that you are thinking of bringing.  after you press "search", it will tell you if you're allowed to bring it into the UK.

Wow even little slices of cheese?  Amazing - glad you posted this, I never would have thought about it.

I've been noshing on loads of yougurt covered raisins lately and they travel great, also pretzels and you can pack a little bag of them and they should be ok, they work about the same as crackers if im feeling a bit sick.  If you are able to drink it, juice is great to give you a little more energy too and helps to keep you from getting dehydrated.

If you bring things on the plane but dont' eat it all, i would imagine you could just toss it before going through customs.

What about just eating all of your snacks on the plane?
