"Goodbye USA" Menu help needed
« on: March 28, 2006, 05:33:05 PM »
I want to have a family "Goodbye USA" party for my husband this weekend.  But I don't know what to make.  He has no idea what he wants as his "last meal" either.  I'm leaning towards a classic cookout, with hotdogs, hamburgers, coleslaw, etc.  But am open to other ideas.

What do you really wish you'd eaten one last time before heading over to the UK?

i'll miss the horrible things i shouldn't be eating anyway:

dunkin' donuts munchkins
white castle onion rings
fried mozzerella sticks from this little sandwich shop in town
it's not where you're born, it's where you belong

I miss really good mexican - great guacamole, normal tasting sour cream....  So, you could have a tex-mex feast!

Don't barbeque...take him to the best steak place you can find.

God, I miss properly cooked steak!

I'm going to have to think about this for when I make the leap across the pond in July :)

Hmm... how about a buffet of a bunch of little things?  That way he can have a sampling of a bunch of stuff he may miss when he moves.  Maybe things from restaurants they don't have in the UK (In-N-Out hamburgers come to mind, mmmmm... or really good Mexican food).  BBQ is always a hit also... your idea of a cookout sounds fabulous.   You could always have it both ways and BBQ steak at home :)

Now I'm hungry  [smiley=laugh4.gif]

God, I miss properly cooked steak!

My parents served steak the first time he came to visit them in the US.  It was medium rare.  He didn't know what to do because he didn't want to insult my mother by telling her that she accidently forgot to cook his meat, but he didn't want to eat it either.  ;D ;D ;D

So I don't know that he'll particularly miss the steak.

I like the sampling station idea.  That way we can have lots of different kinds of good foods.

I miss Taco Bell, mostly at 3am though.  But that's probably just me.  I also miss being able to order biscuits and mashed potatoes at KFC.  Again, probably just me.
I do miss nice big steaks and lobster, though.  Yeah, big huge lobsters smothered in melted butter.  :)

oooo, yeah--taco bell. i forgot to add that one.

there's no good reason to crave it--i can make a perfectly tasty bean burrito at home on my own. but does that stop me> oh, but no.

i do fully intend to steal an a**load of their little taco sauce packets before 13 may, though ;D

I'll second the Mexican suggestion.  Load up before you leave cause you sure ain't gonna get no decent Mexican food over here!   :D

I think a black iron skillet full of properly baked buttermilk biscuits and real butter would be fantastic!

So... the sour cream here doesnt taste 'normal' and the steaks aren't cooked properly here?   I havent found that to be true, speaking only for myself, of course.

But... i totally agree about the Mexican fiesta.   It's easy to find Mexican food here, but very difficult to find really *good* Mexican food here, made to authentic recipes.

You might consider going out for a Chinese one last time too... the Chinese food here is different... not as spicy and you might have trouble finding some of your favourite dishes (they might be called something different here).   Pot Stickers!!   That's something i have never seen here!    I have tried various types of Chinese dumplings, but so far (Im still searching!) they're not the same as the pot stickers i used to know and love back in California.

Girl, you need to get yourself to Manchester or Leeds & go to Red Chilli.

I was out with someone awhile back who was saying something about the steaks over here not being as good as the steaks in the US, and Angus beef was mentioned.  'Erm, Angus beef came from Scotland! ;)

The sour cream here tastes like...ta-da!  Sour cream.  But I buy the one in the dairy section (just like in the States) not the one in the tinned food.

We usually cook steak & Tex-Mex at home to suit ourselves.  Though I do miss Taco Bell for a quick 'Run for the Border' now & then.

I miss New York style pizza and really don't dig all the bechamel used for Italian stuff over here -- like in lasagna. [smiley=bleck.gif]

They do!  They do!  But I think they call 'em some kind of dumpling...but they reminded me of the ones I used to have at Chinese places in the US.  The food is nice & spicy too.  Also, most of the people eating in there were Chinese.

okay then... i will qualify this by saying that some geographic areas of the UK do not have any problems with bland and disappointing Chinese food, and lack of pot-stickers!  ;)   Count your blessings if you live in one of these areas!  :)
