The creme fraiche that i buy is thick and spoonable.  It's not thin or runny, or pourable.   It's almost as thick as Philadelphia cream cheese... that sort of texture.

Same with the creme fraiche I buy.

But I've also seen this on the shelves at Tesco. It's not refrigerated, so I have not clue what's in it, but it might be closer to American-style sour cream. I've never bought it because I'm not exactly sure what it is! Has anyone tried it?

I've seen it on the shelves, but wouldn't dare buy it when I have the fresh to hand.  I prefer creme fraiche too, though I'd never touch soured cream in the US.

I also miss being able to order biscuits and mashed potatoes at KFC.  Again, probably just me.

No, me too. I didn't realize they didn't have that until I went to KFC this past weekend. I was craving fried chicken and so we went to KFC. When I saw they didn't have biscuits and mashed potatoes, I said never mind lets go. DH laughed at me and said I thought you wanted fried chicken, but really you want mashed potatoes. I said...... no, but I can't do KFC without the biscuits and mashed potatoes! He thought I was silly.  ;D

I second having Mexican food if you like it. I already miss Mexican food.

That's how I feel. But I wondered if the stuff above might be more "authentic" in terms of taste/texture because it's sold on the same shelf as the tortillas, refried beans, etc.

I don't remember eating sour cream while I was there (I use plain yogurt and my husband uses mayonaise  [smiley=bleck.gif] - yes, on mexican food).  So I can't enter into that discussion.

I found the beef there to be the same as the beef here.  Never ate a steak at a restaurant, so I don't know about how you can order it.  But his family always cooks their meat well-done.  So if it is a steak - it is tough.

We actually live in the Northeast, so I doubt we'll be getting any less Mexican food over there than we are over here.  But we love the Chinese food in both places, because the menus are different.  Oh, we used to have the best Chinese take-away down the street from us in Swansea....

Anyway - back to the menu.  It's not necessarily things he can't eat over there, just things he's less likely to eat.  We'll be cutting the sandwiches up so that he can have a little of everything.  And I'll have to get him some Kimmelweck rolls.

Starter
Chips and Salsa/Guacamole

Meal
Sandwiches - Burgers with all the toppings, Italian sausage with peppers and onions, and BBQ pulled pork
Coleslaw (my great grandma's recipe - not mayo based)
Molasses Baked Beans
Cornbread

Dessert
Hot Fudge Brownie Sundaes

We live in Buffalo - so we have to go get some real wings before he leaves. We are going out for his last American-style diner breakfast soon too. And I'll send a box of Toll House cookies with him. Since I do most of my cooking at home, there won't be much that we can't have over there. Just things we won't be eating as often.

See I'd definitely go for the hotwings...I have yet to have good ones in a restaurant here... good news is wings are dirt cheap and you can make some mean wings at home.  You have to import the Franks Red Hot though. ;) It's my one thing I always bring with me.

(off topic)
The beef here... well you get what you pay for.  First, it tends to be more natural without all the hormones and bizarre stuff added into it.  Secondly, you have to buy sirlion or rib eye or now even t-bone (be gone you dastardly EU regs!).  Thirdly, get it from a decent butcher or pay for the higher level of supermarket brand.  Fourth, go local if you can.  Less miles = better quality. Fifth, Scottish and Welsh beef are amazing.  Sixth, your average pub grub dried piece of beef is not good quality.  Seventh, if it does not have fat in it, and on it it will be tough.
Eighth, you can pound the crap out of a lean steak to help break up the fibers or choose to marinate it in something nice.  Allegedly commercial meat tenderizer is based on papaya juice.  Anything acidic or slightly acidic will work. Finally, make sure your meat is well hung and aged. :-)

I didn't see any, but I was more concerned that they didn't have mashed potatoes, so I might have overlooked the biscuits. It was all for the best cause we went home and had sandwiches....much healthier for me.  ;D

Same with that jarred guacamole by the same company...I used to get some packaged seasoning to mix with fresh avocadoes but they don't sell it around here anymore...there is NO WAY I am going to try the jarred gloop!

When my teenage daughter first came over to visit...with high expectations that she would move here...I made a list of all the wonderful pros for her to move here. One was that we have a KFC down the street and that is the only fast food she really loves...(it is the mashed and gravy for her!) So shortly after she got here the first time we walked down there for lunch...and discovered NO mashed potato and gravy  :(

Obviously that is not the main reason she didn't move over (because I always make her mashed and gravy whenever she wants it) but it was just one of the things she cited for not wanting to move...''blah, blah, blah...and can you believe that they don't even have mashed potatoes with gravy at KFC???!''  :o

(hot dogs here are gross, however sausages are good)

But they tend to use bread as filler, so just a warning if you suffer from a wheat/gluten allergy, like my wife does.

hot dogs here are gross

Maybe you just bought the wrong kind?

Rule 1:   Dont EVER eat a hot dog at the cinema
Rule 2:   Dont EVER eat a hot dog that came from a jar or a tin
Rule 3:   get thee to the refrigerated cooked meat section (where all the lunch meats, salami, etc are) and buy Herta hot dogs!   They are exactly like what i remember hot dogs to be like in the US!

Although they are not a patch on the gorgeous Toronto street vendor hot dogs..  :(
