Easter eggs
« on: March 30, 2006, 07:00:34 PM »
Ok, wasn't sure where to put this question, but thought Food Talk might work.

Don't know if this is a silly question.  The only eggs that I've seen here are the brown eggs.  Can you color brown eggs to make Easter eggs?  What do you do to decorate eggs for Easter?

And further, can you buy white eggs here anywhere?  ('Cause my friend says the brown don't color too nicely.)  She has Paas coloring tablets from the States, but my grandma once showed me how to use regular food coloring before -- it's not too hard to do that if you don't have the Paas stuff.

Yes, the kit they sell in Lakeland is for brown eggs.

But the choccie ones are much nicer.  :D ;)

We have tons of white eggs in London!  Do they not have them in other places??  I never even thought that they didn't!  Although I have seen lots of other colored eggs as well - even nice light pastel colors.

The lakeland kit is a good one...

Yes they do sell white eggs here.

They also sell really neat blue eggs.  Take a look for Rare Breed eggs next time you are in your larger supermarkets.

Brown eggs will need stronger colors.

Basically you take a separate cup for each color, dissolve about 8 drops of regular liquid food color, in 1 cup of hot water. Stir in about 1/4 cup of  white vinegar and commence with the fun.  You can use a white wax crayons to do designs or stickers or whatever comes to mind.

With brown eggs you also just get more muted tones.

If you goggle there are tons of recipes for natural egg dyes as well.

Lakeland is at: http://www.lakelandlimited.co.uk/

Also I have seen dye kits in other stores as well like Debenhams in the furniture/decor section of all places. Oh and Marks and Sparks too.

You can color brown eggs but they don't color as nice as white eggs.  I just used regular food coloring with a dash of vinegar.  The darker colors work better. pastel doesn't come out too nicely.

I would also like to know if and where you can buy white eggs!  I know you can get the eggs that are layed already colored. Found those in Sainsbury

What stores are you finding the white eggs in?

I'm in the Cotswolds and we just get brown eggs here.  I wonder what people normally do...  Also, I haven't seen a lot of Easter bunnies and such here.  I haven't even seen a lot of cards.  It doesn't seem like Easter is a big thing here - not even from a religious standpoint.

Oh and Debenhams had the cutest little furry chickens and bunnies and the like as well.

I think it's big just not as commercial... like most things here.  You don't get the three aisles dedicated to it.  I have not been to ASDA, but I am sure they must have something.

You likely would have to go to a larger city to buy some things.

We have three cards shops and all stock cards as well as Sainsbury's and even Wilkenson's.

They do spend quite a bit on Easter and you have to think it does have quite a religious significance and a family significance for those that aren't religious.  They take off Good Friday and Easter Monday.

I work in a Whittards store and Easter is our 2nd busiest time of the year!  It's everywhere here. Marks and Spencer do a big range as well.  Though I must admit, none of it is from a religious standpoint.

Oh can I be your friend?  ;D

Not a bad place to work though I'd spend most of my money on stuff there!

There aren't that many Easter things here where I live.  By the religious, I meant that I figured if it wasn't as commercial that maybe they'd be focusing on the religious aspect.  Where I am it just doesn't seem acknowleged that much.

I'll have to see if I can get to Debenhams, Whittards or M&S!

The Cotswolds are lovely, but I can imagine a lot of things might be harder to come by depending on where you live.

My uncle (in law) is a Vicar so we get all the religious aspects!  Want to borrow him? :-)
