Specks in eggs
« on: March 31, 2006, 12:50:15 PM »
I've noticed that quite a few of the eggs I crack open have a few small specks of a burgandy color in them. I thought it might be blood but wasn't sure. It still seemed gross and I throw those eggs away. Earlier today though I cracked three open and into a bowl. The fourth I dumped in had those specks in it. I didn't want to waste the whole bowl so I sat there and picked out the specks...it wasn't easy!

Well, I just tried Google to see if I could figure out what it was and I found this:

Quote
Bad Eggs Versus Good Eggs. Every time you crack open an egg, check it for runny egg whites and/or red speckles. If you see that the yolk has a few red specks in it, usually blood droplets, don't use it - throw it away; the egg is no good for consumption.

Okay, gross! I ate a boiled egg the other day and bit into a part of the white that had that in it.

What is wrong with these eggs? I usually find them in the egg white or attached to the outside of the yolk. I've never ever seen this in an egg in the US. Is it something about the eggs here? Am I buying a crappy brand, or something? Are there really different quality of eggs? I have no idea but I'd really like to stop seeing this. It's gross.  :-\\\\

I eat eggs with the specks in them all the time.  We buy free range eggs & I was under the impression that the specky ones could be fertilized eggs. ???

Carolyn is right - if there are specks in the egg, it's been fertilized and the specks are the forming embryo.

I've never seen eggs like that, maybe I'm not looking close enough?

LOL, gross!

I get easily grossed out when it comes to food. I didn't eat meat for 8 years because I was just grossed out by it and even now I only really eat chicken and that's only because my husband will make it so I don't have to see or touch that gross raw stuff!

There's no way I can eat these eggs now after reading that!

hahah...i guess i get it from my dad.  he grew up really poor...so he ate every piece of every item on his plate when i was growing up.  i wasn't allowed to get up from the table unless my plate was clean.  and i'm talking even the grissely/fat part of steaks!!  but even now that i'm older...if it doesn't smell, isn't turning into a science project, or hasn't changed colors...i'll eat it.  if i get sick, i get sick....i'll learn my lesson and rethink my ways.  but until then, i'll pretty much eat whatever (i hate, hate, hate wasting food!!)

LOL -- must be the farm background in the family.  My gran could catch a chicken in the yard, wring its neck, pluck it & toss it in the pot.  THAT I could never do.  But a little ole speck in an egg...pah. :P

For some weird reason this doesn't gross me out either.... I guess I've never really thought that hard about it and I've certainly never been sick from it.... I always figured it was natural 'cause I see them quite often (we also only buy free range organic.....)

Well yeah -- I'd be throwing out maybe 4 out of every 6 eggs otherwise!

I have only seen this on very few occassions.  It is certainly not a common phenomena.  I'd try changing your brand of eggs!

The egg specks are the result of chickens doing what comes naturally in the chicken world.  You know the song -- 'Birds do it.  Bees do it.  Even educated fleas do it...'  How can it not be common?  I've seen them more lately -- perhaps it's the season.  No worries! :)

I've seen it a lot, in all types/brands of eggs and also in the US. It doesnt' bother me but I do pick it out if the egg is being eaten plain (fried or whatever) and not mixed into something. I'm not really sure how it could be *bad* for you.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
