Ever heard of Global Tax Network
« on: April 08, 2006, 11:35:24 AM »
I am scrambling to find a US/UK tax account to do my expatriate taxes (uk and US citizen having worked in both countries for the 2005 tax year).  who is experienced in expat taxes.

Anyway after reasearching on the internet I found out about Global Tax network who is supposed to specialise in expatriate taxes. Due to the fact that you have to put alot of trust in your tax accountant to file taxes on time etc I want to make sure that the accountant is good.

Has anyone had any experiences with the Global Tax Network?

Thanks

The questions that you should be asking are:

1. The qualifications that the adviser has.  In the US s/he will either be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or an Enrolled Agent (EA) to the IRS. In the UK s/he may be a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA), Chartered Accountant (FCA/ACA) or Certified Certified Accountant (FCCA/ACCA).  If the adviser does not have one of these qualifications in BOTH countries then I would not consider choosing them.

2. The experience of the adviser.

I do not know anyone who has ever used GTN (which I find surprising in itself).  Looking at their website it seems that they use different folks to provide the UK and US advice, which is never ideal.

Last year, my company paid Ernst & Young to do my taxes as part of my relocation package.  Unfortunately, it was a one-off thing, and we're on our own this year.   Our E&Y advisor referred us to Global Tax Network in Pasadena, California.  We have yet to contact them, but at least E&Y think they are reputable, if that helps.

It seems kinda odd to go to California since you'd want joined-up UK and US tax advice to make sure you are savings taxes on both sides of the pond.  If you want to send me a private message I'd be glad to fill you in on those who provide US and UK tax advice over here. :D
