Since when are they allowing it?  The Indian government is still sitting on their ars* to pass this law.

Nah I think it's done now.  The Indian consulate in Chicago is accepting applications and has the forms on its website.  Not sure about the British High Commission.

I absolutely can't wait to be a dual national. I'm counting the months now!

Retirement in Italy with no visas to worry about? Heck yes!

Has anyone ever renounced citizenship? I have no plans to renounce my US citizenship, but have from time to time wondered what the financial ramifications would be (tax related stuff). Does that mean I wouldn't have to pay capital gains on the sale of a house in the UK? All this stuff is so confusing it makes my head hurt.

I'm already a dual national (not US/UK) because I wasn't born in the US...my long term plan is to move back to the UK semi-permanently as a skilled worker after I've got some years of experience post-masters and I'm hoping to have triple citizenship by my mid-30's ;)

Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

I've toyed with it from time to time. If the financial ramifications justified it I would consider it. DH still seems to think I'll miraculously change my mind and agree to move back some day, but I can assure you that I won't.  ;)

That's pretty much how I feel. It is nice having two passports, but if it wound up saving me hundreds of thousands of dollars, I'd drop that US citizenship in a heartbeat!

The rules for dual nationality for India are far from straight forward.  Indians who are granted citizenship of another country effectively get their Indian citizenship downgraded...

Yeah I don't think I'd do it if I was an Indian citizen.  But it's cool for those of us like bvamin and me who want easier access to India - and no visas any more!!

I have been looking into citizenship as well.  I'm planning on starting the process soon as it takes about 6 months to complete.  While I too look forward to being able to go through the green lane with my husband and 3 children (although at the moment I get to stand in line alone for a blessed few minutes alone while my husband takes care of the kids), my main reason for wanting citizenship is to be able to vote.  I've lived here 4 years now and would like to be able to make my voice heard in the polling place rather than just in conversation.  I do know that if we ever move back to the States, my husband will be taking American citizenship as soon as he is eligible.
Life is what you make of it and I can choose to be happy or miserable wherever I live...I choose to be happy.

How des one go about becoming a dual national? Is there some form to fill out and mail in? Any linkage for this? And since I'm on a fiance visa and marrying on July 15th, then filing for my FLR, will I have to wait until I get my ILR approved, to say that I can stay in the country indefinitely?

I am going to apply for my dual citizenship.  It won't hurt in any way, as I will still be American.  I think it is sensible as we are soon going to see a nazi type crackdown on immigration in both the US and UK.  I don't think green card holders and IDR holders will be safe.  If DH and I moved to the US he would apply for US citizenship as soon as he was allowed.  I want to make sure my DH, the kids and I all have the same nationality, doesn't matter what nationality it is.....

You can apply as the spouse of a UK citizen after being settled here 3 years (time on fiancee visa counts toward this), so I'll be going for citizenship in September 2008  :)  after getting ILR in February/March 2008.
