Thanks for all the replies, we are sticking with bottled water from Sainsburys.  We looked into two companies who deliver and in a month or two, we might just do that.  I didnt even drink the tap water in SF either!! :P

We use bottled water.I buy it at Lidl. They sell 2 ltr bottles of mineral water for 23 pence each. I buy it 4 cases at a time and it lasts for a couple weeks.

Our tap water is gorgeous!

When we lived in London, and came up to Scotland to visit MIL, i used to bring empty plastic bottles with us, to fill up with Glasgow water and take back to London!

I'm another brita person. I drink a lot of water, so I usually buy small bottles to carry around, but even those I sometimes just refill from the brita. At the office we have a filter machine too....

We just drink good old tap water. It's always ice cold, clear and tastes like, well, water.

I'll totally second that.  I drink tap water in Scotland; no problem.  It tastes exactly like water should taste.  What is the difference?  Does any one know?  Is it that the water in England is disgustingly hard, and the water up in Scotland is much softer?

I have heard the water is a bit softer up north

I'm not sure. Maybe that ours comes from a loch a few miles away? Maybe in the more populated areas they have to do more treatment to it? Not really sure. Would be interesting to know.

I am sure that we will have an answer, now that it has been asked.

I remember years ago there was some big stramash about water from Loch Katrine (i think) getting sent down to London for their water supply?
Everyone was all up-at-arms about sending OUR water DOON SOOTH.
Cant remember the outcome of this...

hubby & i bought 1 of those pur wap tap things back with us from the last trip home. wasnt that expensive either $25 for the intial start & 3 pack filter im thinking was $16. but it doesnt fit our current kitchen tap so we either have to buy new kitchen taps or keep buying bottled water. more than likely buy new taps cause the kitchen sink is starting to leak at the base. sometimes we use a old water bottle & fill it up wit  tap water & put it in the fridge so its gets really cold it doesnt taste that bad. but we have written on the bottle tap water so we know the good stuff from the tap water.

I think the whole bottled water thing is a massive scam. Everyone was drinking tap water quite happily until a few years ago. People in the 3rd world would give their eye teeth to have the access to clean drinking water that we have, but we just add to the mountains of waste with vast quantities of plastic bottles.
Roughly 1.5 million tonnes of plastic is used every year by the bottled water industry, and around a quarter of
the 90 billion litres of bottled water drunk each year is consumed outside the country of origin, adding to
greenhouse gas emissions.
Tap water is perfectly safe to drink: in fact, UK regulations are far more stringent when it comes to contamination of tap water than mineral water, which is allowed to have higher concentrations of bacteria and nitrates than the stuff that comes out of the tap.

I agree with you and think you're completely right. I'm perfectly happy to drink my tap water here in SW Wales ... but if it tasted disgusting, I'd still probably be tempted to buy bottled water no matter how safe my tap water was.  :-\\\\
