I think the whole bottled water thing is a massive scam. Everyone was drinking tap water quite happily until a few years ago.

Tap water is perfectly safe to drink: in fact, UK regulations are far more stringent when it comes to contamination of tap water than mineral water, which is allowed to have higher concentrations of bacteria and nitrates than the stuff that comes out of the tap.
Read some of these articles for extra information:

Not everyone, and not all tap water is safe to drink. At my parents house (well water) you cant drink the water w/o getting sick unless youve been drinking it for a VERY long time....and this isnt something we just came up with, not to mention the water tastes absolutely horrid. My parents used to get their water from the local park where they had multiple spigots all over the park, until that water started to taste bad as well and they went to buying it from the store.

As for me, I cant stand the taste of spring water usually, but when I am pregnant its 10x worse, anything w/o minerals tastes like dirt, literally. And sometimes even the mineral water is gross to me, like highland spring :( But sainsburys water and I get along fine ;)
