plane tickets? one-way or round-trip?
« on: April 15, 2006, 02:21:29 AM »
I don't know if this belongs here (please move if it doesn't!) but it figured like it'd fit best here... has anyone had experience booking one-way tickets instead of round-trip tickets? I understand that with a spousal visa you usually dont have any troubles, but on the fiancee visa (good for 6 months) would you? or BUNAC? or TWES?

My main one is BUNAC right now, it's WAY cheaper (like half the price) to book a one-way ticket and just have my parents write a letter or something saying that they expect me back on such-and-such a date, and I also have (conveniently enough) another major that isn't finished.. as far as I know I can keep this major open, and get a letter fro mthe school stating that I can finish the major if I want, and that it's fine for me to enter back in Jan of 2007 after finishing BUNAC (showing ties to the US and compelling reasons to return)

Would this be enough to book just a one-way ticket (and then book the return portion when prices when down closer to the time, sept or oct usually) or do you think this would cause problems?

thanks for the advice :)

btw small nugget of joy, a local bar i frequent has more or less said that they'd love to have me work there on weekends and such whenever i wanted, i may have just landed a temporary job until I can get myself situated in a better one - YAY!  ;D

Hey Katie, you do know that if you go on a BUNAC visa you can't get married in the UK and switch to spousal right? You'd have to go back to the US and get married and get your visa.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

I dont know about on BUNAC :( But fiancee visa one-way should be fine, because the visa is to settle, you can switch in-country from fiancee to spouse, and you dont have to go back to the US if you dont want to.

Im impressed you found a cheaper one-way flight!! We went with round-trip because every few months I will be going back to the US to get my son.

Out of curiosity and completely off topic,  but where did you find a one-way that was cheaper than a round-trip??

I was wondering that to.  I had to get my one way ticket home from SF through hubs friend who works for Virgin.  Otherwise, it would have cost close to $1000, I was better off buying another r/t.  (visits home to SF will be a few times a year, so it wasnt to big of a deal!)

I don't know about necessarily cheaper, but one-ways are often times more convenient.  I entered the UK last January on a student visa with only a one-way ticket, because I had no idea when I was coming home.  There was no problem, because I had all the documentation of when my course ended, etc. and it was a 6 month visa.  Actually, I don't remember anyone making a deal of 'coming home' during either my visa application OR immigration at Heathrow.  I might've gotten asked about it once, but I guess a verbal answer was enough to satiisfy them.

I know that I can get Virgin one-ways for $300, which is pretty damn cheap, if you ask me.  I honestly haven't bought round-trip in so long, I don't know how much they cost!  However, the flexibility is invaluable, because if your dates to return change, it's damn expensive to change a plane ticket!
BUNAC: 9/2004 - 12/2004. Student visa: 1/2005 - 7/2005. Student visa #2: 9/2006 - 1/2008. FLR(IGS): 1/2008 - 10/2008. FLR(M): 10/2008 - 10/2010. ILR 10/2010!!

studentuniverse.com, expedia.com and orbitz.com all have cheaper one-way tickets from NYC to BRS (and LON as well) than round-trip

Ah.  Student Universe isn't cheaper on one ways from Newark, which is where I fly from.  Gotcha.

I flew from JFK to London Heathrow on a Virgin one-way ticket for $200 on February 28th 2006. I had only booked the ticket 3 weeks prior to the departure date. I think it also depends on the time of year.

Its all about the time of year and of course, west coast will cost more!

Well, from Madison WI to Birmingham England, one way was $1800 - round trip was $770 - so guess which one I chose?  I am not saying it's always that way - coming back from England to US, one way was the least expensive.  Go figure.  Makes no sense to me.  Best bet is to check out different airlilnes, time flights, etc, if you have that option and do not have to travel at a certain time.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
