I hear that although my iMac will work in London, taking it to the UK voids the warranty.  I'm a little irritated at Apple's attitude toward a 5 month old product, especially since I bought the 3 yr. warranty and mentioned I was moving to the UK.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks for all the great information. We have our "cultural briefing" this week and are off house hunting next week, with June 1 our move date. Looking in SW London area.

why does bringing the iMac to the UK void the warranty? An iMac thing?

I have an iBook and was told I could bring mine to the UK no problem and it would be under warranty still.

Thanks so much for the prompt reply! My information was from the imac support site and was planning to call tomorrow, but wanted to ask someone who has actually had experience. There is so much to do and so little time!!

How long is the warranty?  I would say don't buy one over here if you can avoid it - it's nearly double the price for no good reason!!  I bought my iPod online from here but using the US site and had it shipped to my parents.  Quite a big savings.

I just got the iMac for Christmas and my husband purchased the 3yr warranty so if Apple says the warranty is good, I'll take it with me. There are enough electronics to replace without adding an iMac to the list.

Dell's warranty is global, so I'm pretty sure Apple's is too after the feedback I've received.

My son worked at the Apple store and he and my husband thought it would be a great gift; I wish we'd known Apple was going to Intel processors, because I definitely would have taken the G5 back and waited. As a long time PC user the change has been frustrating, I should have known when setting up the imac the "Take control Lose Command" screen popped up  :o that I was in for a few headaches. I've kept my Dell for work since my apps only run on XP, cross platform sure keeps you on your toes (Linux at work)!

I bought my iBook just a few months ago, brought it over here with me.  No way would I buy one here!  Wayyy to expensive.  I hope Apple says the warranty is still good, regardless of where you take it. :)

I'm not sure about Apple's conditions specifically, but in many cases it's not a case of the U.S. warranty becoming void, just that a North American warranty will not be honored by their U.K. service centers (and vice versa).

If the worst came to the worst, you could just  send it back to family in the U.S. and have them take it in for repair/replacement.

My warranty was honored just fine!  The LCD screen went, we took it to the Apple store in Bluewater, and two days later it was fixed and back in my hands.

That's what happened with my Dell laptop. Spent about £100 on shipping it both ways. Then I got a nice £100 VAT bill when it was returned. I have to be able to prove it was repaired under warranty in order to get that refunded.

Dell does offer international warranties and if I'd had one then I could have had it repaired here. I'm suprised Apple doesn't offer the same.

If you bought this warranty you will be fine. If you need it repaired while in the UK you can bring it in to Apple or send for a free box from them and ship it to them for repair.

The plan also provides global repair coverage, which can be very important if you travel abroad.
