Travel DVD players
« on: April 20, 2006, 01:04:47 AM »
Hi all!
We're about three months away from the big move (Indiana to Belfast!).  We'll only be living in country for about 6-7 months.  I'm thinking about getting a travel DVD player for DS (who is four) for the plane trip.  The airline that we will be using will not have seatback TVs.  My issue is that all of the ones that I've found only have US plug and thus 110.  I will only need the thing for the trip there and back.  Will I be able to safely recharge it using a converter?  Anyone with experience?
Also, we've been thinking about taking along our PS2 for our US DVD's (PS's are region free, right?).  Where do I get a UK power cord?
Thanks tons!
Michele

Hiya!

Remember, if you bring over a US dvd player, it'll only playback US region 1 DVD's. It may have a feature where it can playback region 2 (UK and euro ) dvd's but you'll need to check the specs of your unit.
DVD players like this dont use 110V to work, they use an adaptor which converts to 12V (usually).  2 things with this, you can check to see if your adaptor has the detachable type 'figure of 8' cord. If it does, you can get one here which has the UK type plug on the end for a few pounds. If it's non detachable, you could use a step down transformer to take UK 240V on one side and provide a US 110V output on the other. Then you simply plug in your US connector/adaptor to it.

It's the same with the PS2, you'll need the UK figure of 8 power cord to plug it in. However, I 'think' US PS2 units will output into the US NTSC system for video output, which wont work on UK telly's. However, some tellys here have 'NTSC playback' which will 'show' the US picture correctly. I may be incorrect on this, and it may be worth talking to a Sony centre to find out for sure.

As for buying items check www.maplin.co.uk ebuyer.com, dabs.com, amazon.com, argos (high st shops) dixons etc etc...  they all should have various PS2 and power cables

Hope this helps!

You're correct.  The composite video output will be U.S. NTSC standard, but as you say, many modern British TVs will accept NTSC direct video inputs anyway.

??? Okay.  Thanks guys for the answers.  But could I have them in plain English (or Spanish?)?  Will the PS2 work there?
Thanks,
Michele

Simple answer:  Yes, so long as you buy a TV which is "NTSC playback compatible."
