Health club, how much?
« on: January 02, 2004, 02:41:18 AM »
Here in the states my family and I spend alot of time at a local health club that offers just about everything from child care  to swimming. I often go 5 times a week. What are the health clubs like , are they child friendly(child care facility) and what is the monthly cost to join?
                                                         Thanks
                                                          Cad

It all depends where you are.  London ones have *everything* and more...and cost ranges from £40-50 per month up to £100-150 a month.

Most local councils have a leisure centre that is a lot cheaper though and often offers the same services.  I'd check out the one in your area before going to a big gym.

A leisure centre...that's one of those terms that doesn't make sense when you first hear it and then you start using it as though you've used the term for years.

Let's see, it can be anything relating to a non-professional sports activity. Um, I guess that's right. It's a public swimming pool, it's a bowling alley, a gym, a skating rink...just one of those catch-all terms...but for some reason, people here don't say "I'm going to the bowling alley" it's almost always called a 'leisure centre'.

I hope that explained it.
Darn...I should have just saved my random thoughts and looked it up in the dictionary to begin with: "public facility with sports activities". That says it better.  ;D

What pleases me to no end is that gyms here tend to be far less costing than in the US. I recall paying an outrageous annual fee in the US.

Here is a price list for my local gym and area sports facilities. Although it's just for my area, it does also link to other gyms throughout the UK and perhaps you can find a particular one for their own price list. Christie Miller

Basically, a one-year family membership is $32, which gives you a 35% reduction in price to the use of the facilities.

I couldn't find the individual prices on this web site, but I can get them from a price list at the center if you want to know more...I go a couple times a week. If memory serves, a gym workout is not more than a couple of pounds for the day. Aerobic classes are something like £5 per session. My leisure centre (actually we have two in this small town) has a lot of actiites and things to do!

I'm so excited to hear that.  I'm wanting to join a gym, as I like to use the fitness center here at uni (but it's free for me...hehehe).  Everytime DF has said we can join, I think no way, we can't afford it.  Glad to know I'm wrong. ;)

Let's not forget that many cities have fantastic parks and trails for walking, riding bikes, etc. that you can also take advantage of in good weather. :)

Thanks Lisa - I'm a workout addict so I definitely will look into that link when I move to London (though I'm hoping ASL has a good gym for me to workout in for free!).

Yay! I'm a total workout addict too, and I've been really worried I'd be unable to keep it up once I got to the UK, so that's a relief!  :D
