Length of stay before marriage
« on: April 21, 2006, 07:47:56 PM »
Alright, got my fiance visa - YAY!  Now, how long do I have to be in England before we can book a wedding?  I thought it was 4 weeks, but have heard conflicting accounts.  We don't want a big wedding, just a registrar - second marriage for both, not kids, just want it legal!  AND - after that , how long do I have to wait to get my FLR?  Mr Seaton went over it with me on the phone, but to be honest, all I heard was that my visa was approved  :o
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Our local register wanted me to be here a week before we got married, I'm not sure if thats all registers or not.
You can apply for your FLR right away after you've married if you want.

edited to say: i went through so much trouble getting approved by my local register, since I was on a fiance visa, we had to travel to Bury St Edmunds to get approved by them to get married, they took me in and asked me questions about our relationship, then sent me out and had Dale go in there and asked him the same questions... I guess thats to make sure its not a sham ??? anyway...after the appointment we had to wait I think it was another week to get married

Here is a link from the General Registrar's Office, which is applicable if you are not getting married in a Church of England.

You have to give notice, and register at a designated registration office and you have to have lived in the area of the registration office for at least 7 days prior to registration.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/marriages/acivilmarriage/marriagec2a2.asp

The rules for giving notice are different for registering a civil partnership:

Thanks,
Kit

Bear in mind that the residency rules are a lot more leaniant in Scotland, so if you are in that much of a hurry, check out there rules instead.
