Not a new thing at all! I agree with AN - they've just always been 'bags' or 'handbags.'

Haha, I'm 23 and I use tote bag!   In general, I usually say purse instead of bag, sometimes I'll say handbag though.  But a wallet is always, always a wallet - never a purse!  And I never encountered the term "pocket book" until I went to college for some reason.

No, tote bags are tote bags.  Tote bags are different, however, from handbags/purses.  I don't think I've ever said just "bag", actually (except if I'm referring to a trash bag or something of the like.)
