Does NHS cover Chiropractor?
« on: April 22, 2006, 02:37:59 PM »
Well, the topic is self-explanatory..just wondering if NHS covers Chiropractic care or if its private pay..I have scoliosis, and being pregnant my back is really hurting lately :(

Im not even sure I CAN see one while pg but I had thought it was safe, if I remember correctly, so long as they know what they are doing with a pg woman.

No the NHS does not cover chirporactors/osteopaths or anything that's not seen as traditional medical care.   You can see a physio on the NHS however.

Chiropractic is also not that expensive privately as in the US.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is physio?

Thats what df said but he wasnt 100% as hes never needed one. Anyone know how to find one in the area that I can get rates?

I had to see one in the US for a few years because of a leg problem, thats when they found the scoliosis, and a subsequent set of visits after I moved somewhere else showed I also have one leg longer than the other...geez ;) Explains my odd way of walking though.

I have this, too.  It's quite common.  For me it didn't make much of a difference until I became a pretty serious athlete, but I found physio most effective for this, and a corrective insert in my sports shoes.  Unfortunately I also dislocated the shoulder that's lower in a fall, so I often have to crick my neck, but not sure anything can be done about that.  My dad's side all have rheumatoid arthritis.  He used to a serious athlete himself, and of course, the first place he got that arthritis was a shoulder he'd damaged whilst doing sports.

The British Chiropractic Association has a search feature -- just put in your post code and find a chiropractor near you. To get specific rates, I think you're going to have to phone around and ask.

I saw a chiropractor this year for a few sessions -- the initial visit was about £30 with followup visits at around £24 (I don't remember the exact numbers).

I have that problem with my leg too which does fun things to my back.  An insert in my shoe makes a huge difference.  My chiropractor and I are on almost a first name basis though.  I've wondered this same thing, but didn't think to post the question here.  Thanks!

I never knew till I started to do a lot of sports and develop knee injuries on the longer leg, which was taking more of the force due to the size discrepency, and then the shoulder AFTER I'd dislocated it.  But otherwise, I probably wouldn't have known.

I have Scolio too and have been wondering this myself.

I have kept my private USA health insurance (http://www.healthplanofnevada.com/) and I am almost sure they belong to a larger network. Truth is that I simply have not had the time to research it, but I am trying to find out if they cover chiropracters in the UK. (they did in the US, 100%).

Let's take our wigs off in the shopi aisle and fight it out.

I've only had one UK chiropractic experience, and she used an activator. I don't know if that's standard or not but, if it's a concern for you, you could certainly phone a few places and ask before making an appointment.
