Students Loans & Spouse
« on: April 22, 2006, 07:35:05 PM »
For those of you who are US citizens,  students in the UK, and also married to a UK citizen -- how did applying for loans and paying or school go? How much were your spouses expected to contribute (percent of income, etc)?

Also, did you enter the UK under a spousal visa or a student visa? Would it be best to get married in the last year of school or does it not make a bit of difference?

I noticed that with a UK spouse, you don't need to declare him/her for taxes. Since the FAFSA is based on tax forms, does this mean that you are basically considered single when applying for loans? I emailed a similar question to FAFSA and am still waiting on a response. I will let you know what they tell me.

Thanks for the advice. =)

I entered as a student and got married just  before that visa expired, but I really don't think it makes much difference when you get married....

I file taxes as a married but filing separately. It didn't effect my loans - I still got what I asked for. But they weren't private loans - they were govt. loans. Might make a difference to a private lender but I don't know for sure.
