World Cup Songs
« on: April 28, 2006, 09:01:53 PM »
Anyone have a good link or know a list of (England's) World Cup Songs over the years (official or unofficial)?

I'm putting together a package for my nephews and want to burn them a cd.

I know:

Cup of Life - Ricky Martin
Top of the World - Chumbawumba
Three Lions - Baddiel & Skinner

dang... that's about it!   :-\\\\

(oh, and I do know this year's of course!)

Thanks, I had tried that... I may not be searching it correctly, but it looks like it lists every song that was in the Top 40 during the time of the World Cup in a particular year, not specifically songs of/for the World Cup.

(but I 'preciate you looking!)

My favourite World Cup song is the Scotland squad song from 1982 (Spain), 'We Have A Dream'

I awoke in the night with a fever
and the sky was the darkest blue
and a still small voice was calling to me
'your country is needing you'
(aye, just like that!)
and away in the distance i can just make out this ball coming in from the left
and im starting to run, to run like hell
and the voice is getting louder and louder and louder
cryin 'HEY BIG YIN, GAUN YERSEL!!'
i have a dream, if dreams come true
then Bonnie Scotland, i'll play for you.
I hope and pray that if i do
Then Bonnie Scotland, i'll score the winning goal for you.

Then the next thing i know, someone's gone and tripped me
and i've fallen just inside the box
(that's a penalty!)
The ref, he looks to his linesman,
and he's pointing straight at the spot!
(that's brilliant!)
Then John Robertson, who normally takes them
Is handing the ball to me!
(you dont say!)
then i hear my old lady screaming blue murder,
she's saying 'IT'S NO' THE BAW YER KICKIN YA EEJIT, IT'S ME!!'
We have a dream....

did you notice though, that underneath the top-o-the-pops lists, they have a list of special releases for the world cup.  It doesn't come up until the 60s & 70s though and mostly 80s on.

I liked this Scottish song by Del Amitri

Don't Come Home Too Soon

So long, go on and do your best,
Let all friends have whiskey on it's breath,
The world may not be shaking yet but you might prove them wrong,
Even long shots make it

So go then, out into history,
And show them how easy it can be,
You might not believe it yet but pretty soon you'll see,
Even long shots make it,

Just don't come home too soon,
Just don't come home too soon,

And I don't care what people say,
We can laugh it all away,
But if I have a dream at all for once you won't be on that stupid plane

And the world may not be shaking yet,
But you might prove them wrong,
Even long shots make it

Just don't come home too soon,
Just don't come home too soon,
I don't care what people say (just don't come home too soon)
We're gonna laugh it all the way (just don't come home too soon)
I don't care what people say (just don't come home too soon)
We're gonna laugh it all the way (just don't come home too soon)
I don't care what people say (just don't come home too soon)
We're gonna laugh it all the way (just don't come home too soon)
I don't care what people say (just don't come home too soon)
We're gonna laugh it all the way (just don't come home too soon)

Unfortunately for Scotland they did come home soon

Yep.. this is my second favourite!  :)

And sorry for being pedantic, but the line is actually 'Let all France have whisky on its breath...'  :)

Don't forget Vindaloo by Fat Les - you can't ignore the "unofficial" songs!!  ;D

I read that Alex James (Blur, Fat Les) was thinking of doing another one this year 'cause he thinks the Embrace song is crap. Haven't heard any more about it though.

Yes, I'd forgotten that I actually do have that one!
Now that it was pointed out to me, I compiled a HUGE list from that site, which includes ALL football songs, official or not.
(because there's also the equally annoying to some "Hey Baby" by DJ Otzi!)

There's also talk of the song that a group of (construction?) workers penned being released since the song by Embrace hasn't really, um, been embraced...  :)

I'm hoping to get as many songs on one - maybe two - cd's, that they'll play over and over and over and over and over... much to the annoyance of their parents ;)

World is Motion was done by New Order for the 1990 World Cup.
And the world first spoke to me in Sensurround
