th is is probably a repeat topic, but is it just me or does the ketchup in the UK taste completely different to that in the US, like more sugary or something?

It's probably just a matter of trying different brands until you come across one you like.

ok then, in reference to the ketchup they use at McDonalds, I dont eat it much here (McDonalds that is) but I was in Glasgow for a meeting on my last trip and I was starving, and strapped for cash so I bought a cheese burger, and it tasted like someone had put a packet of sweet-n-low on it, I've noticed it at other places as well

That sounds good! I might have to try it! Usually I just get the organic Heinz stuff from the supermarket. Actually, I don't eat it all that often, but the bf isa ketchup fiend! I'd like to try to wean him off Heinz and onto something more interesting.

I completely agree with the McDonalds ketchup observation, it does taste different.  But so far that is really the only difference I have noticed.  The normal bottles of heinz you would get at the supermarket or other restaurants are the same.  Nice to know someone else out there has a discernable pallete when it comes to McDonalds.   ;)

Ketchup or red sauce?  ;D

I agree with vnice...Heinz tastes the same here. Thats all I have ever bought so I really dont have much to compare to.

One thing I noticed is there is a distinct difference between asking for ketchup and tomatoe sauce. For the longest time I couldn't fathom why anyone would want tomatoe sauce (as I know it). But I realized it is basically a generic, watery ketchup pastey gloop. That's the stuff that I can't stand.  Sorry, but it's Heinz all the way for me!

where i live, 'tomato sauce' is just another name for ketchup.   No difference.

Actually when my husband first moved over here he thought the Heinz ketchup here tasted different to the American.  His mother sent over a big bottle and I did a taste test and couldn't tell the difference but he still insisted they didn't taste the same. So I emailed Heinz and they said they make it to the same recipe but the ingredients are sourced locally so that may account for a slight difference in taste.
