Don't worry! It's not all houses in the UK. In fact, I was born here and have now lived here 3 years and still haven't seen what's been described here! Maybe it's a London thing? Or maybe it's in city houses that are smaller with less room to build on? The houses where I am are very old and definitely weren't built with indoor plumbing, but because we're out in the country I think people have been able to build large-ish extensions. Is that a possible theory? Honestly, I've never seen a loo without a sink in the same room in this country (although I have in France)!

But that doesn't explain why you can't have a washbasin in the WC.  Otherwise, you still have to go into the bathroom aferwards to wash your hands.  Assuming that, after you use the loo, you do wash your hands. (I'd hate to look at that door handle with a microscope, BTW).

I am right there with you. My in-laws have a lovely spic and span house but they have an upstairs WC and separate bathroom (they do have a loo with a sink downstairs which I prefer to use)...anyway, I don't like using the WC without a sink. I always make sure no one is in either....so I can quickly jump into the bathroom for the sink.

Agree about door handles in general...as someone else posted, I always use a paper towel to open the bathroom door in public/or at work when I am walking out. Neuritic...maybe so but I feel better about it. Too many women "go" and just walk out without washing their hands. Also I use the paper towel to turn off the taps after I have washed my hands in public bathrooms....I learned that from one of my friends in the medical field...saw her doing it years ago and it stuck with me.

I'm trying to think back to all the places in England I've ever seen with a separate interior WC.  I'd say that there are probably as many, if not more, which do have a small lavatory basin in there than those which don't, but maybe it's a regional thing.

Many of the old Victorian houses had no inside toilet until relatively recently.   The toilet was typically in a small brick-built "cubicle" attached to the rear of the house, and accessible only by going outside.   Many of those had no washing facilitites in them.

It's called a bidet.     :)

I'd love to see some of you guys in India, where there is no toilet paper and just a jug of water by the side of the hole in the ground you have to squat over....

LOL! When I'm near places like that, I just cross my legs for however many days are necessary!!!

Although, when you think about it, washing is far more sanitary than just wiping.  :-X

There are still some old public toilets in France which are really only the next step up, although they do have a proper porcelain fixture set into the floor rather than being just literally a "hole in the ground" and they do have a flushing system:

..and for us inexperienced girls, you usually need to wash your feet afterwards! (using those toilets while drunk, is not a good idea!)

This is why I just cross my legs and wait it out. I have zero skill in this area. Never have. I can't wee in the woods. I can't wee in a hole.

how can any one ignore the subject of toilet when the society is faced with human excretions of the order of 900 million liters of urine and 135 million kilograms of fecal matter per day with totally inadequate system of its collection and disposal. The society, thus, has a constant threat of health hazards and epidemics. As many as 600 out of 900 million people do open defecation. Sewerage facilities are available to no more than 30 per cent of population in urban areas and only 3 per cent of rural population has access to pour flush latrines.

and here I was worried about hand washing hygiene.... :o

Another reason why you never know if it is animal sh*t or human sh*t on the side of the road in India.   :-X

BTW, I have used these holes in the floor in India, and I can tell you from experience, not fun at all.....
