There are still some old public toilets in France which are really only the next step up, although they do have a proper porcelain fixture set into the floor rather than being just literally a "hole in the ground" and they do have a flushing system:

Yuck!  I had to use that in France.  It was horrid.  I was already sick to my stomach.  The smell in there made it worse.  People have awful aim.

We used those types of toilets in Japan too.  It was funny because they had some of the most high tech, fancy button, multi feature toilets I've ever seen in my life.  And porcelain holes in the floor.

My husbands mate is muslim, I'm not too sure where they are originally from, but Dale was telling me he went to use their bathroom once and there was no toilet paper,Dale asked if they had any and they got very quiet, apparently where ever they are from, they don't use toilet paper.they wipe themselves with their hands, and wash their hands in the sink once they are done. They also don't use utensils when eating, they use their hands

I have yet to stay with any Muslim family (in the UK, USA ro even in a Muslim nation) that still does not use toilet paper. However,  It's also very important to note that many Muslims only  use their right hands for eating and shaking hands as the left is traditionally considered unclean.

Traditionally Muslims wash themselves with water after using the toilet (there is often a jug of water in the loo for this purpose or a little shower head thing) using their left hand and when they eat, they use their right hand only whether they use cutlery or not, ie they do not eat with the same hand used to wash themselves.

Many of the old Victorian houses had no inside toilet until relatively recently.   The toilet was typically in a small brick-built "cubicle" attached to the rear of the house, and accessible only by going outside.   Many of those had no washing facilitites in them.

It's called a bidet.     :)

Our house is Victorian. We still have our outside loo just as described! My husband was way out of uni before it was no longer in use!  Well the loo part was sealed over in the mid 80's and now it makes a great home for the BBQ and serves as a potting shed. :) This house also used to have two "bathrooms", the outside loo and one loo upstairs.

I grew up camping and with those lovely toilets (holes in floor) so I guess I just go where I have too... I find that far less disgusting than the thought of someone actually sitting on a public toilet seat. :-X

Also, as far as I am aware there are still places in the USA with the old pull type toilets, outhouses and no working plumbing.  My grandparents did not have an indoor toilet until the late 1970's.

Even in the great old land of the free there are plenty of areas that fight to have basic needs.

Hindus in general as well.

This is how my father's family in Mauritius does it. My grandmother's house has a modern toilet now, but still has a room with the "hole in the ground" as well. They also keep toilet paper on hand for guests (and people like me), but mostly wash with the jug of water after using the toilet. It's not a habit I was brought up with and so I would find it strange to do, but it's certainly cleaner than just ... wiping!  :P

I understand it may be cleaner than wiping but if you wash yourself... honestly don't you have to dry yourself (wipe) as well.  Do they just use the same towel over and over?  I mean you can't just pull up your pants onto a completely wet bum?  I don't get it :)

We went to the flea markets on the northern skirts of Paris this past January, and all the public toilets available were of this sort - no seated John for us!  Crazy that these things are still around in Western Europe.  Much cheaper to run, I guess.

Some of them actually have a place to put your feet.  I guess I am in the minority, as I would rather use one of these and have dirty shoes- then sit my bottom on a seat where who knows who with who knows what has been sitting.  Filthy.

Your shoes are filthy anyway, let's face it.

Ahhhh, a fan of what we affectionately call the Turkish toilet.

I don't get it either?

Also, I don't understand the French bidet....so what do you have to do, take off your pants/clothes so you don't get soaked? There was a bidet (next to the toilet) in a hotel I stayed in Durham, I have never been able to figure out that whole concept?  ??? Please someone explain?    ???
