Orthodontia in the UK
« on: May 10, 2006, 11:21:17 PM »
Hello all.

I am moving to the UK sometime in January 2007.  I recently started orthodontia here and will only be part way through my treatment when I move, anticipating another 9 months after I arrive at least.  My stay in the UK may well be permanent, depending on the job issue.  Does one have access to orthodontia services via the NHS.  Has anyone experienced moving in the middle of treatment, whether it be with a child or with an adult.  Any information which can be given will be appreciated.  :)

Orthodontic treatment is provided by the NHS to children under the age of 16.  Over 16, you have it done privately.  If it's any consolation, NHS dental care isn't free anyway, you still pay 75% of the cost.

I remember the days of NHS dentists...I think you may struggle to find any now.

That is a good question, is a dental scheme a normal benefit that employers offer in the UK?  Something we should look out for with our jobs?  It is fairly standard in the US.
WARNING My thoughts and comments are entirely my own.  Especially when it comes to immigration and tax advice, I am not a professional.  My advice is to seek out professional advice.  Your mileage may vary!

Don't really have answer directly to your question but just want to add my tuppence.

Britwife is correct about the 16 age limit. Yes if possible get it done when they are young. My ex and I have just looked at that route for the dear dd and it's gonna raise the bank manager's eyes. But I think it is more affordable here. Isn't it? Anyone?

I think I can get dental insurance through my work as an extra. I have private health care whether I like it or not. I have never used it.
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Another thing to consider is whether the treatment is essential or cosmetic.
