Anyone know where I can find those big fat Dutch pretzels? The ones that come in a box, not a bag? Doesn't have to be a U.K. store. I'll happily order from one of the expat food sites too.

Not sure if Dutch pretzels are similar to German ones, but... i have found the box of Bavarian pretzels in the freezer section at Aldi.   They are SO good!!

Ooh! Were they hard or soft when defrosted?

Also, anyone know if farmer's cheese exists here and if so, what is it called? And if you've ever used it in recipes, is paneer an appropriate substitution? I tried cream cheese and cottage cheese (bleh!) but neither works quite right.

This would suggest paneer is closest, though I'd also have thought from the article that cottage cheese would work

We got those as well ours came with a little bag of salt to sprinkle the salt onto them before you cook them.

yep... what Shugga said!

You thaw them slightly for 10 minutes before putting the salt on, so that the salt sticks, rather than rolling right off, then bake them.

I picked up Welsh goat cheese in Sainsbury's yesterday and it tasted quite a bit like farmer's cheese, though the consistency was a bit off. Wish it didn't cost 12 quid a kg though.

Pretzels are really easy to make yourself if you don't mind baking! Here's the recipe I used.

In Glasgow I have found the Tesco stocks Ritz Crackers, sadly piddly little boxes that do not last me the drive home (all of 4 miles), I really need the American mega sized box of them that will last me maybe 8 miles before I eat them all  ;D

If you are in Edinburgh or Glasgow always poke into Pekhams (http://www.peckhams.co.uk/). They have Hershey bars, Oreo's, Coke (in American bottles), Microwave Popcorn, Skippy Peanut Butter (YAY!), sometimes Arizona Tea, and they can source much else you only need to ask them!

For Costco, does anyone know how membership works over here? Someone told me they only giv you membership as a business or public servant?

We've had Ritz for as long as I can remember (and I'm 45!)
