I was in Costco in Manchester this morning and saw they had giant bags of Kirkland brand chocolate chips and large bottles of ranch dressing (didn't notice the brand of it, though).

Waitrose kind of sells chipolte mayo if anyone is interested.  It will cost you about 2.50 or so to make your own.  They sell the "discovery" brand chipolte paste in the world food aisle next to the taco stuff.  You can buy your own mayo and mix in a couple spoonfuls to your liking.  From the amount of paste needed to make it seems like the jar will last quite awhile.  ;)

Lidl have a few "American" foods in at the moment. Just been for a few items and picked up some crispy fried onions for DW as we probably won't be going to the US this Thanksgiving for the first time since 2008.

Hey - I've aggregated everything on this panel as well as my own finds here: http://www.americanpantryuk.com/?page_id=285. I'll be attempting to make my own Velveeta soon - wish me luck.

For American burgers, there's a new Shake Shack AND a new Five Guys in Covent Garden!  :)  They just opened last weekend and the queue was so long (out of both!) that we didn't get a chance to try either, but they've gotten good reviews online.  :)

NO FLIPPIN WAY!!!! Five Guys just opened ?!?!?  I absolutely LOVE Five Guys!!  The BEST hamburgers EVER!!!!  Mmmmmmmm, I haven't been there since I moved from Atlanta a year ago. :-(  Where is Covent Garden?  I must go there when I arrive in the UK.

There's a great shop here at the north end of the Kilburn High Road that's got all manner of international food. The beans (kidney, black, red, black-eyed peas) are, like, proper Caribbean -- don't know what it is, but the beans in Sainsbury's just don't taste quite the same as I'm used to, and these do. Also, found proper tortillas in there. Very excited for tonight's pork soft tacos. Oh, and the okra it sells was very nice in the jambalaya I made earlier this week. (I'm not from the South, nor have I ever lived there, but I have a serious Southern food problem. Need to find callaloo greens next -- I'm told by a friend of Caribbean descent that they'll sub nicely for collards.)

My husband looked into spring greens before I came over -- they're the same species and cultivar group as collards (which also includes your kales, though there's a big difference to me in taste between kale and collards), but they aren't collards. For the record, my friend said callaloo aren't collards, either, but she suggested it might actually taste the closest.

If you're in London, Tayshaw's may have collard greens. It's the only place in London that I was able to find escarole, another leafy green vegetable. I don't remember seeing collards the last time I was there, but it's been awhile.

They are located on Druid street and are part of the 'Spa Terminus' producers: http://www.spa-terminus.co.uk/map/

(Borough Market and Maltby Street are more geared toward prepared foods and tourists, so if you're looking for great produce, try the Spa Terminus vendors - it's worth the journey.)

Oh, good tip! Even better: It's just a one-mile walk from where I work. Done and done. Many thanks, jayvee -- I'll be checking it out soon!

You can quite easily grow your own collards- they'll grow just fine in a container and don't take too much effort.

I've never gotten food on my underpants!

I believe Tayshaw's and most of the other vendors are open only on Saturday morning til 2-3pm, though you can check their websites through the link I posted.

--btw Kappacasein has the best toasted cheese sandwiches - I would like one right now but am trying to drop a few pounds :-(

Another excellent idea. Although I am something of a Thanatos when it comes to vegetation; to put a plant in my care is to send it careening inexorably toward death. (Let me take a moment to assure that the kittens, they thrive.) Then again, this knowledge has never stopped my attempting to grow things. Thanks for the link!
