pockets of americans around the M-25
« on: May 14, 2006, 02:10:00 PM »
Are there any known 'pockets' of Yankees just within or just outside the M-25 on the west side London (from southwest to northwest)? Interested if anyone is particularly happy in these regions and has found a community with a decent population of Yanks for support...

There are millions of them where I live. We're in South Buckinghamshire - specifically in Gerrards Cross (which is extraordinarily expensive but my dh's family have lived here since it was just a little pokey rural town and have all stayed....)

Honestly you can barely swing a cat without hitting an American here. But other than my UKY friends I don't tend to hang out with other Americans - once you've been here for a while you'll find that making friends through work and activities is an easier way to "click" with people and that just because someone is American isn't necessarily assurance that you'll like them.  ;)

Still I can see why you would probably like being around people in a similar situation as yourself and I think people who move here with their American families rather than moving here to be with a British spouse might get a lot out of settling in an area near each other!

Sorry, that was a really wordy answer. I should have just said, yes, South Bucks, Gerrards Cross in particular - loaded with yanks.   ;) It's about 25-35 mins on the train to central London and an easy drive into west London.

Cobham in Surrey has a large American population.  There's an American school there as well.

The area you are talking about in Surrey has 3 American Schools within close proximity of each other, TASIS in Thorpe, ACS-Cobham and ACS Egham.  Because of this and the fact that there are quite a few high-tech companies in the area there are a lot of Americans and Canadians living around here.

So some good places to look at include Virginia Water, Egham, Cobham, Waybridge, Walton, Sunningdale, Ascot, Windsor, Old Windsor, Woking and other areas around these places.

BTW, it quite green and beautiful in most of these places!

Just a thought, but if you want to hang out with Americans, why are you coming to Europe ? The super thing about living abroad is knowing the people and building relationships in your host culture. You won;t come to know the country hanging out exclusively with other expats.

this is why the OP asked.  BTW not everyone moves abroad to immerse in the culture  ::)

I suppose you find pocket of like-minded people all over the world. Some  examples: Chinatowns, "Little Italy(s)" in major cities; Earl's Court in London filled with Aussies; Brits in Spain and France as well as other areas of Europe. Some need to be around each other for the language, some for the culture, and some for the comfort of being "home." ;)

Perhaps my motives for asking the question aren't clear. We are not relocating to the UK to try and hang out with yanks - we do that all day long now with mixed results. Indeed we are looking to broaden our cultural experiences for both ourselves and our kids - but it is nice to think that we might locate somewhere near a group that can relate to the cultural differences we might struggle with and help us.

So this is a long way to say - nope, we aren't looking for a mini-America, far from it. Would be nice to not feel too isolated so that was the basis of the question.

Looking forward to continuing to get help on things we don't understand via this community as well. Best UK/US website for candid information out there.
