Looking to buy in Bath
« on: May 24, 2006, 06:24:35 PM »

I have found some really lovely places in Bath (sure beats over priced, not so pretty houses in Reading).

Anyway, for those of you who live in Bath, can you tell me about the Oldfield Park area? Is it nice, safe? Any feedback would be appreciated? Thanks!

The friends I have in Bath told me the three places to stay away from living in in the Bath area are: Oldfield Park, Oddsdown, and Twerton due to there being people in the streets at all hours and what she described as "riff raff.".

Smoothie, thanks for your input! We are trying to expand our reach since I can work from home a bit of the week. Guess its always best to know the local area.

Isn't Bath one of the most expensive places to buy a residence in the UK?  That's what I've been told.  ??? :)

It is very expensive, though we have noticed that in the past month, housing prices have gone down significantly. Also, its more affordable if you live in a village just outside of Bath.

yes, villages near bath are more affordable.  I let a house near the university on the hill.  Oldfield park is not bad.  Whenever I've visited it seemed like a combination of families and students who let - so that might be the 'riff raff' that someone is refering to, but honestly it seems nice to me.  Let me know how your search goes, as my partner and I are going to begin our buying search soon.

Alright Becky...I live in Oldfield Park and you don't think I'm riff raff!!!  ;)  The nice thing about my neighborhood is it's proximity to Moorland Road which has some shops. It's also an easy 25 minute walk into town. There are also a couple of bus routes if you prefer that. I would agree to steer clear of Twerton and Odd Down. Also, Combe Down. The houses are nice, but they're falling into the sink holes. Don't be swayed by the great prices up there!

I should point out though, that there are a ton of students in Oldfield Park, due to the proximity to Bath Spa Uni and the fact that it's on university bus line. Even students from Uni of Bath live over on this side of town. It can be busy and the Sainsbury's is always crowded with them. There's a co-op on Moorland Road that I use often, just to avoid the Sainsbury crowds.

How funny, now that i actually live here and have seen areas for myself, I would agree with Bmore that Oldfield Park does not seem riffraffy. Perhaps it was the student aspect that someone was referring to.
We are about to embark on the housebuying process around Bath and are looking at villages outside of it.

Is the Original poster still on Uk Yankee - and if so I wonder where they ended up buying a home here?
