Dental - Bite plate/Night Guard

Wondering if I can get a Bite Plate/Night Guard in the UK, whether through an NHS dentist or private. I just want to make sure they are available. I grind my teeth at night and currently have one. It will probably wear out in the next year (stress of moving perhaps??) but if I need to I'll pay the $400 here (US) to get a "back up" one.  Has anyone every attained one in the UK? 

$400 for a night guard?!  What a rip off!  Mine was $85 from my dentist.

Is it $400 because you've already got one and will have to pay the full amount? I didn't realize they were so much!

I hope they are fairly cheap through the NHS when I need a new one!

In the US, each insurance will only cover or partially cover one in your lifetime (of having the insurance). The first one I got was mostly covered. I think I paid about $75 for it.  I'm just trying to think ahead.

It all depends on your insurance policy in the US.

I had no doubts you could get them here in the UK but £280 is pretty expensive. You've got me wondering if the NHS will pay for one, or at least, pay a portion.

My boyfriend here has one and he only paid £25 for his. Not sure if all dentists would be that cheap but his was and this was a new one for grinding as well.

Be careful, people. I called my husband's UK dentist when I was still in the US to check the price, and they are totally DIFFERENT. The cheap ones(under £100) are not the hard fit-to-your-mouth kind you get in the US for $4-500. They are generic soft plastic guards, according to his dentist. My dentist in the US(who is also a friend) said those are not good because everyone's grinding pattern is different. Plus, the soft ones do not keep your jaw from moving as well as the hard plastic ones. They can actually harm your teeth. I, personally, would not take a chance on a cheap one, because you won't know the damage until it's too late. You may end up spending more in the long run.

Please check with your individual dentists and make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

Hmm...I have a soft one. It's basically like a sports mouthguard that you'd boil and then sink your teeth into to mold but the dentist did a plaster of my bite so that it's a very perfect fit. I've been using that kind for 4 years now and it works fine for me. I've never shown any signs of grinding though... just clenching.

My bf has the soft one as well and I noticed the difference straight away. He doesn't bite or at least has cut down. He seems to suck on that more than bite it and his jaw no longer hurts on a regular basis. It was the best 25 quid ever spent

Mine's the same. I remember that awful plaster mold. Ugh!!! But it was worth it -- I do like my mouthguard!

i think there is a broad range of clenching/grinding types. I'm already showing damage from grinding and have had alot of work. I think with the more serious problems, you need the hard one. Like I said, I just think you have to know what you need and compare prices based on that, because a soft one in the US would be very cheap also.

Not necessarily. I think if it's a custom-made one, it'll be expensive regardless of whether it's hard or soft.

i guess I'm mis-understanding the previous posts. I thought those of you that have them are saying the soft, cheap ones are custom-made??? Or are the custom-moulded ones more expensive than the £25 mentioned??

Mine was custom molded by my dentist.  It's not soft and squishy but I don't know what everyone means when they say theirs is hard.  Anyway, it was $85 and my insurance wouldn't pay a dime.  I'm on my third one as my darling beast-dog ate the first two.  Yes, ate as in swallowed and puked up at 3am.
