Sore Ears
« on: June 09, 2006, 01:56:51 PM »
Hey everyone,

Does anyone have a dog that gets sore ears?  I have a mini schnauzer (who isn't all the mini) and he has been getting really sore ears lately.  The vet said they are just dirty and to clean them...I do clean them quite often I try to do it at least twice a week but in the last month I have been woken up at least 3 times in the middle of the night because Dillinger is going crazy because his ears are bothering him.

I have to mention he also has a condition that is affectionatly called Schnauzer bumps...it is like an acne condition that dogs get (especially the schnauzer breed) it creates these itchy bumps all over his body (but I control Dillingers with special shampoo and anitbiotics as well as I keep him clipped pretty close).  I have noticed that when he gets a flare up of these bumps his ears tend to get really goopy.

Ok with all this said, has anyone found any home remedies that seem to keep sore ears at bay?  Or do you think this is just something that will be a life long battle for him?

Just some thoughts.

Oh your poor baby!  My cat gets ear infections all the time and my vet said that the skin and ears are all kind of connected so it makes sense that the dog is having sore ears when his skin condition flares up.  I have to keep an eye on my cat so that her ear canals don't get inflamed because then it causes her ear drums to burst.  I have to clean her ears out with this special solution and I do it 3 to 4 times a week.  She hates it, but it keeps the problem at bay and we've only had one flare up since starting the cleanings.  Just keep an eye on him because you don't want his ear drums to burst if his ears get real infected.  Not only does it cause them lots of pain, it's really expensive trips to the vets to get them healthy again!  Just keep his ears clean so that his ear canals can get air into them and dry up any crap that's in his inner ears so as not to cause major problems.   Good luck to you and your pup!

Thanks,

I will keep that in mind. I know he really is uncomfortable because he is pretty easy going and it is sort of unusual for him to wake me up.  It seems I can get the problem to calm down pretty easily but I hate when it gets to the point that he can't sleep because when he can't sleep I can't sleep.  I literally spent about an hour last night just rubbing his ears and getting him to be calm and get him to sleep.  I did get him to sleep (yes he is like my child) and he slept pretty peacefully afterwards, I didn't cause I was worried, but then again he seemed pretty chipper this morning.

Can I ask you if that solution you have is it blue??  I think I had that stuff a while back.

I use a homemade cleaning solution to keep Weston's ears from getting infected.  He has droopy spaniel ears.  The recipe is on this page: http://www.zimfamilycockers.com/EarCleaner.html

The stuff I have is clear and it's called TrizEDTA by DermaPet and it's a cleanser for dogs and cats.

That recipe is good for keep do the risk of yeast and bacterial infections because the alcohol is drying, the iodine is antibacterial, and the vinegar produces an acidic environment which kills the yeast.  But make sure that Dillinger doesn't have something more serious (I'm sure you already did, I just worry about recommending home remedies).

I was just a little nervous using it on my dog at first (not being an approved pharmaceutical and all), but couldn't stand taking him to the vet to get his ears cleaned frequently at $40 a pop.  It works well on him and he has had no bad reactions to it.  We only use it about once a month now.

Good luck finding something that makes him comfortable.

I am going to try the vinegar-betadine-alcohol recipe as well, but so far I've been cleaning Ede's ears with just plain vinegar mixed with water at a ration of 1:10 (1 part vinegar, 10 parts water). IMHO, commercial cleansers are very expensive and often overly aggressive -any ingredient I can't pronounce, I find troublesome.

If your dog has skin problems in addition to ear problems, it is a very strong sign of allergies and the best way to deal with the ears (and skin) is usually through diet. Ede, my 10 yo Border Terrier, had ear problems for 6+ years. They were so bad that the tissue lining his ear canals started ulcerating and these benign tumors needed to be removed surgically at least once a year. He would wake up at 6 am every morning (coincidetally, this time is also a very common time for astha flare-ups in humans) and literally scratch his head off. Last summer, I switched him to raw food (BARF) with no grains whatsoever, and he was removed from the smoking household where he'd stayed most of his life, and when he had his ears checked in May (one year after his last ear surgery) there were no tumors at all! His ear canals are still narrowed from all the scar tissue, and need to be cleaned every other day, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was.

I would strongly encourage you to pursue the ear problem aggressively, possibly with a holistic vet who will do more than just throw ear meds at you -Ede's condition was the end stage of a long series of ear troubles, and I wish it hadn't gone that far.

Good luck!
Ness

Awww yeah Ness good idea,

I was told by  a more holistic minded vet to try and cut back Dill's corn intake.  I am going to look into someting more along those line.  I had him groomed this morning and it seems that his ear are getting much better, plus he went swimming today so he is very much a tired and happy dog.

My dog used to rub his ears and face along the carpet until the fur would rub off.  My vet told me to give him an antihistamine, which didn't work.  So, I tried changing his food to a quality brand (no corn, no wheat, all natural etc..) and it worked.  He doesn't scratch anymore and no longer has bloody spots on his head.
Also, a lot of dogs are allergic to chicken.  My dog gets fish or duck.  It seems to work for animals that have allergies.  I used Fromm dog food in america (http://www.frommfamily.com/), but now use a similar brand in the UK (they should have Fromm here by December).

Hope this helps...
