Your best Ham recipe
« on: June 11, 2006, 02:29:22 AM »
I have my first spiral cut ham for tomorrow - what do I do with it?

I've heard of people pouring a can of coke on it, or rubbing mustard and honey on it......... any ideas for a nice flavour? Does it get "soaked" first? Any/all tips appreciated :)

I make Nigella's Coca Cola ham all the time... it's fantastic.  You boil it in 2 litres of coke, then rub a mustard/treacle/clove mixture over it before baking.
Just google it!  :D

Like QG ...we make a variation of the coca-cola ham and what you can also do is place it in a turkey bag, pour the coke over it and slow cook for hours.  Drain off the coke and glaze as you see fit.

The only problem with sprial hams is they will dry out beyond belief if you try to cook them using a regular ham recipe so don't cook it as long. :-)

Basically it is a ham... pre-sliced...

have you ever heard of a US place called honey baked ham?  They do them..

regardless it's just a pre-cut ham... :)

Some people like them because they are easier to serve and the nice coating bits drip down into the ham!

Yum um um  ;D

Took the advice, coke and the glaze (which came with it, didnt realize until we opened it) and took care not to over-cook it - oh my gosh, delicious. We had it with asparagus for dinner and then a sandwich for tea.......I'll happily be having ham sarnies all week now.

Presuming the sugar/citric acid in the coke breaks down proteins or something to make it tender?? Really very tasty and a new favourite. The whole half a ham only cost about $14, so it was a major bargain too when a decent brand of ham here is $7.99 per lb.

Thanks  :)

Ditto on the coca-cola ham.  My sister did it when we were in Canada.  Soooo yummy!
