Chicken soup
« on: January 14, 2004, 03:27:08 PM »
Didn't know if someone could tell me a good brand of Chicken soup.  I have been trying all sorts of different soups that I find at Sainsburys but haven't found a chicken soup that doesn't have this diffent taste that I am not familiar with.  So far my favorite is Scotch Broth but would love a basic chicken soup similar to the Campbells type.

Thanks

I am probably not the best person to asnwer this as I am vegetarian but Stu LOVES the Heinz cream of chicken soup. You should be able to find the Campbell's one if that's your favourite, if your local Sainsburys doesn't have it try another supermarket, I see it everywhere.

Lidl's (if you have one near) has some wonderful Chicken noodle soup! It's the next best thing to Campbell's IMO! And best of all it's cheap!!

You got there before me!

Are you talking about the one in the BIG can - with the pasta and stuff?  Yummy.  I buy the Scan chicken & herb meatballs from Sainsburys and put them in that soup, along with extra carrots, corn, and some "mixed" herbs - my guys can't get enough of that!  Very hearty indeed.

But it's fine by itself, too - some nice warm bread...I'm hungry!  ;D

Chicken soup is very easy to make from scratch if you're ever in the mood.

Just take a couple of pieces of chicken on the bone, brown them in some oil in a deep pot.  Add some sliced carrots and celery (as much or as little as you like!) and saute them with the chicken for a couple of minutes.  THen add about a liter of chicken stock (two or three oxo cubes in hot water will do it) and simmer it all for about an hour.  When the meat gets tender, pull it out and separate it from the bones, pop the meat back into the soup.  THen take some speghetti and break it into 1-2 inch pieces.  Bring the soup up to a full boil, pop the speghtti noodles in and boil for 10 minutes or so.  Enjoy!

Next best thing to Cambells.  :)

Thanks for the ideas...I really should just try and make some myself...from what has been said it sounds pretty straight forward.  I was just trying to find a soup that had a thinner broth and most of the Heinz ones I have tried and I am not much of a cream of chicken fan.

Thanks again

I used to LOVE "Mrs Grass's Chicken Noodle Soup" that came in a box. It had the little packet of 'chicken flavoring' and a little yellow egg (not exactly sure what that did) with of course the noodles.

The best part was that you can as much or as little water as you wanted. Plus, I thought it tasted great!! Much better than any canned chicken noodle soup I tried. :D  I haven't found any here that I love.

I'll have to put that on my next US Food order from the parents!

Just wanted to say thank you, Wishstar -- for that.  I've had a nasty cold all week & was looking for something to make for tea on Thursday, since DH has Spanish class on Thursday nights & gets home late.  I browsed belindaloo's chicken pot pie recipe, then happened to run across your suggestion -- which sounded fab.  I improvised a bit (of course), tossed in some chopped onion we had that needed using -- sauteed with the other veg, and I used those wide egg noodles.  Thanks for the inspiration!  I didn't think about putting it together so quickly before, 'cause usually when I made stock -- I'm starting with leftover roasted chicken & then I cook the stock up for hours.  But I used a mixture of the veg & chicken Knorr liquid bouillon mixed with boiling water.  It came out fine and took hardly any time for my being poorly & lazy that night!

Adding loads of sliced garlic and fresh parsley is great for colds too. Even if you do reek.  ;D
