What to drink?
« on: June 13, 2006, 03:19:13 PM »
I'm the meal-planner and cook in the family, and DH has gained about two stone since I moved here.  He blames it on my cooking.  I eat the same things and about the same amount that he does, and I've actually lost a couple of pounds.  I think it's what he drinks.  I'm happy drinking water.  He's a soda addict.  He wants to drink more heathily, but I'm afraid that we're running out of options.  He hates diet soda, doesn't like regular water, won't drink flavoured water because of the after-taste, and hates "no sugar added" squash.  Drinking tea or coffee all day long can't be good for you.

What do you drink when you want to lose a few pounds?

Pretty much the same situation in my house -- I drink water nearly all the time and DH likes soda.  He's much better about diet soda than he used to be and we'll have that in the house about half the time.

How would he feel about juice mixed with sparkling water?  Has he tried Pepsi Max?  I think that's one of the better-tasting diet sodas.

I think it's probably just a matter of him making a real effort to learn to like something else.  There's nothing to say he can't still drink soda, but it's not good for anyone to ONLY drink soda, coffee, and tea.

Does he like fruit juice?  I've found that 1/2 fruit juice and 1/2 water gives the taste of fruit juice, but with less calories.  That's the only thing I can think of, except for those powders you add to water (crystal light?), but I don't even know if they have them here.
There are some great fruit flavoured water, with no aftertaste, but I can't think of the name at the moment.

My husband drinks too much soda as well, but he's getting better with drinking water.  Especially when I 'forget' to buy his soda :)

I think the more you drink water, the more you crave it and really start to prefer it.  He just needs to 'bit the bullet'.  Losing weight isn't easy (why is gaining so easy though?) :P

Yes, the diluted fruit juice thing is all I can think of too! My dh drinks a lot of diet soda but he's coming around to the water thing. I still don't think he drinks enough, but he's much better than he was. I just read that you need 2 litres a day and if you're trying to lose weight or exercising a lot you need about 750 mls MORE! That's a lot of water!

Yup, half juice half water is what hubs drinks.  Im just a water drinker, sometimes juice.  I never drink soda and he only occasionally drinks it.  Try the half and half combo.  ;)

Thanks for all of the great ideas, ladies!  I've never thought of diluting juice.  Juice is something that he'll definitely drink, but I had been concerned with the sugar content.  Diluting it with water or even sparkling water makes so much sense!

I used to say I hated water, but now it's all I drink other than a morning cup of coffee and the very occasional glass of wine. I agree with uber yank that if he would bite the bullet and try to drink water, his body will take over and demand more of the same and drinking water will become a new habit. I started by drinking it down in little half pints, like taking medicine, I mean I had to force myself, but in just a few weeks, I was really into drinking water!

How about fizzy water?
My DH wont drink plain/still water, but he drinks loads of of sparkling water (non-flavoured).

Two stone since you moved here!  The same happened to my husband a few months after we were married, and his family blamed it on the American wife. :)
I think he's just happy and content, StuzMrs.
The extra pounds will probably go- my husband has evened out some in the five years since.  Despite being a chocolate addict...

For some reason, he hates fizzy water.  I think it's because he's a soda addict and expects something with bubbles to taste sugary.  I may have him try a half-juice, half-fizzy-water combo.

Herb tea, turned into iced tea. Get some of those licorice roots to steep into it, don't even need sugar, it's yummy without!

Or maybe any all fruit tea iced, that is good as well.  I found that Whittard Mango black tea is really good iced.

How about water with lemon juice added, or lime, just a squirt, it has taste but wouldn't add as much calroies as half water/juice.

Excellent idea. I always dilute my OJ, not so much because of the calories, but because I find full-strength juice a bit cloying. I usually do about 1/6 juice to 5/6 water -- or sometimes even weaker.
