Great.  What once was my favorite airline is right up there with Virgin now.  Im so mad right now.  Even Virgin gives you 2 checked pieces at 50 pounds each.  BA is saying 1 now???  WTF?  Am I reading this correctly....if you are in business or first class you get 2 checked pieces, but economy passengers only get 1 now? :\\\'(

For a slight relief it does say...

*World Traveller passengers travelling to or from the US, Canada, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will continue to be allowed two checked bags in line with the local government regulations.

And I never have flown pets as baggage before. I thought generally they went as cargo anyway (except in the US)

From what I gather it will be 2 pieces of luggage but can't be over 23 kilo each, that is for transatlantic travel..

Domestic is 1 bag.......which is still a bast**d

Ok, thanks for the info...atleast its (2) pieces.  I am totally bummed they changed the weight to the same as Virgin.  Used to be 70lbs each and now its down to 50lbs.  Stupid airlines.....

I got an email from them this morning and I was SO irritated. I struggle to make the weight limit that it used to be. How I'm supposed to shop in the US and come back with 20lbs less is beyond me!  ;)  >:(

edited to ask: I haven't checked details on the site yet, does anyone know what the new charges for excess baggage will be? The email said they would, for the most part, be less.

I am flying my dog over in Sept and they said he can't go as baggage waaaay back in Feb so that wasn't a shock but I nearly lost my mind when I thought it ment I could only bring one 50lb piece of luggage over.  PHEW!!!!

But yes this does suck, here again is a case where money talks and those of us teetering on the edge of poverty get the shaft again.

I just read about this too!! I was already carrying overweight bags as carry on!!

Yes, I was pushing the 50lb checked limit with United and Continental my last two trips over. I imagine Virgin will follow suit too.

It doesn't say what the excess weight fee with be with the max to 70lbs (as the other airlines do) other than
All baggage in excess of free checked baggage allowances will be charged at a fixed fee depending on the length of the journey.

bummer, but no shock really  :-\\\\

Jen, Virgin already changed their weight limits, it was either April/May 06...50lbs per bag, allowance of 2 checked.   :(  Ill say it again......stupid airlines!

Yes big time bummer even though no real shock! Still its terrible because when we go to the states with almost empty luggage we stock up on clothes and other things (well mostly me), the 70 lb limit per piece served us well....just!  Now that its 50 lbs....uggh!!  >:(

whoa, I missed that one! I am flying back in November on the return portion of a Continental-Virgin RT ticket. When I bought the ticket I thought what a bummer I couldn't take advantage of the 70lbs checked to SFO!!

No matter now!  :-\\\\

Ok I am flying out of Dulles in Sept with my wedding dress in tow..I will have a total of two suitcases, a carry on, a dog that is flying cargo and my wedding dress.  So what is my wedding dress considered???  Extra Baggage?  Does anyone know and has anyone done this before with their wedding dress.

I think the best thing to do is call the airline or whoever you bought the ticket thru..I have seen cases where they were put thru in the baggage hold.......make sure your insurance also covers accidental damage of your dress!
