New Orleans hotel recommendations
« on: June 14, 2006, 02:55:27 PM »
I have a friend who is going across to NO in October for the Voodoo Festival, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a reasonably priced hotel or B/B, in or close to the French Quarter.

Any help would be grately appreciated as we are sitting at work getting very bamboozled by all the choice available!

Many thanks!

Well, a lot of New Orleans hotels still are not up and running after Katrina.  VooDoo got moved to Austin, TX this past year because of the damage.

Check anything that is on Bourbon Street or right around there.  The French Quarter is still in tact.

Be sure to tell them to go to Cafe Du Monde for beignets and chickory coffee.

Try Hotel Monaco - that one was nice a few years ago.  There is also a Marriott Renaissance Art Hotel or the Marriott French Quarter.  That one is on Canal Street so I'd call to see if they are repaired and back open.

I was down there for our honeymoon before the hurricane and we stayed in the Royal Sonesta in the French Quarter.  It was great - huge rooms, big windows.  It was reasonable priced (<$100/night), but we were down there at the end of June/beginning of July.  Definitely off season.

The big Chain hotels on Canal are open for business and have been for months.  Marriott, Sheraton, Hilton, Wyndham.  The only one not open is the Hyatt.  They are all on Canal and it's a very short walk into the Quarter. Pre-Katrina I traveled to New Orleans at least 4 times a year for work so I've stayed almost everwhere!

Just was there recently. Most of the big chains are reopened. Some are still messed up after housing evacuees for so long. Monaco *I think* it still closed as are some of the really good little boutique hotels. Park View Guest House, I believe is open. Website: http://www.parkviewguesthouse.com/
Uptown and French Quarter are up and running--although nothing like before Katrina.

I'd recommend the Place d'Armes. It's right in the heart of the French Quarter just down the street from Jackson Square. You can almost see Café du Monde from the front door. They're up and open and the last time I was there, it didn't seem too expensive. Especially since you're going at a reasonable time of year. However it has been seven years since I was there so I might not be correct anymore :) Their website is www.placedarmes.com Looks like the value rates for October are $131 a night. Given the location, it's an excellent value.

Chara, what does your friend consider "reasonably priced"? There are some little advertised B&Bs in the uptown area that are quite reasonable. The French Quarter and most of uptown were relatively untouched by Katrina. Here's a link to a really good guide to the local B&Bs. They'll be able to provide with accurate info on who's up and running. The hotels there are screaming about the lack of tourists currently so the room rates should be pretty reasonable.

When I was there in March, there was no such thing as a cheap hotel. Most hotels were still closed, and the ones that were open were full of politicians, lawyers, etc. I was doing volunteer work, and stayed at a FEMA camp. It was clean, the food was good, and the beds were ok. Maybe your friend could consider helping for a few days instead of just partying? Not saying that's the only route to go, but just suggesting.

If it wasn't for going to NOLA to volunteer, I would have never met my DF.

I second that hotel, we have stayed at a few different ones, but I love that one. Just make sure to request either a courtyard, or balcony room. They have interior rooms that have no windows. Not fun. Also, it's reputed to be haunted :D Make sure to eat at Muriel's, at the corner next to the Hotel. Fabulous place. Ask to see the Seance room. Very kewl :)

I am originally from New Orleans but sad to say I haven't been around since November but I  hear that the french quarter is almost back to normal not sure if that is true or not but ... gosh forgetting the name of this hotel...

I would do  a search .. make sure you find out if in the french quarter taht is where I would stay because if you have alittle too much to eat.. or drink your
bed isn't that far away..........a room with a balcony in the french quarter can be a fun experience as well....

here is a webiste I found... and the rooms look like I did a basic search and it was 75 night

I stayed at the Lowes a couple of years ago, and it was nice and reasonable. Not sure if its fully operational though.
