Promises are Bollocks
« on: January 15, 2004, 07:38:02 AM »
Before I moved to the UK I was accepted to UCE Birmingham to be told that I would be allowed to attend full-time on home tuition rates as soon as I was married. Bollocks. I set so many of my hopes and dreams on the promise of able to AFFORD going to uni in the same country as my husband and I cannot tell you how much it has messed them all up.

My uni came back to me after I was married to say that they wouldnt allow me to attend on home rates until 2005/6 (Married in 2002) because I had to have something like 3 years behind me on my ILR status in order to qualify.

Any fiance(e) or spouse of a UKC should be aware of this before setting their hopes on a UK Uni. Proceed with caution and dont take any promises from your prospective uni forgranted.

Now Im 4 years behind the people I graduated with and I'll probably be 5 years behind when I finally am able to claim some finaid in the states.

Goodness Sarah, I wish someone at your prospective Uni had not fabricated such mess. According the current  the visa rules rules one doesn't get to pay normal British fees until after three years--when their status as a foreign national changes with duel (or singular) British citizenship. I don't believe marriage automatically changes that status ever.

I am sorry you were mislead >:( Please go on with your education if you can, and believe me I understand. A one year Masters programme at SOAS is going to cost me around 30,000$ (and that is not including the cost of living!)

Of course, given the tuiton at a lot of private American universities is 40,000$ a year and MA programmes take two years--it puts some things in perspective.

What are your currently studying?

Awesome luck to you,

Samantha***

I back what Samantha says.  I was told by several Universities that you are not considered for UK tuition even if you are a Brit unless you have lived in the UK for the three years prior.  I can't believe they misled you that way.  Awful  of whoever did that!

Awww.. I'm terribly sorry.  They really should've made that clear from the start.

Thanks for the support guys. I'll certainly spread the word if any prospective foreign students cross my path in the future.

I was going to study TV & Radio production but I guess things work out for the best. Ive settled on Photography (for now!) and I'll probably get a great education in photo when I get back to texas. So I may be out of sync with my classmates from high school who are now all graduating. But at least I didnt waste god knows how much money on a degree I wouldnt have ended up using.

Funny how things work out.
